B-6 Level High

I've gotten some more of my lab information back, still waiting on Vitamin D which it appears they may not have even tested so I'm very upset about that and will be calling my PCP this morning. Now on to B-6......the lab range is 5.0 -30.0 and my level is 67.6, double the lab range.  I have been researching this morning and will continue to do so as I've always read/heard that of all the B vitamins the only one that could be toxic is B-6.  This really concerns me.......just the little I've been able to read this morning excess B-6 can cause neuropathy just as inadequate other B vitamins can do so.   If anyone has information they can share I'd appreciate it. I do take a B-complex everday and wondering since my B-1, B-12 are fine and I supplement separately with those (may cut back on B-1 to 3 x a week, due to results also) maybe I should cut back from everday right now? Thanks for any input you can provide.

Yikes!  I swear, if it's not one thing it's another, isn't it?  This is one other reason I "used" to hate vitamin supplementation, because often times you can make things worse or make yourself toxic. Setting one thing off balance can start a downward spiral...It's a crazy game these vitamins and supps!  (we really have no choice) It's so hard for us too because of all the supps we take, that taking anything extra could be over doing it...(As some of us do tend to do naturally anyway)  I noticed that some of our protein drinks and bars are fortified with extra vitamins and all cereals too...They think they are doing people a favor but for people like us on a daily vitamin regimen, might be totally over doing it without realizing it. I try not to buy things with extra added vits...or I cut back on my daily vitamin to one chewable rather than two when I notice that there are a list of fortifications. This is why I personally try not to use food in boxes, cans or ready made...I cook natural food from fresh or frozen ingredients... I read that B-6 is not even a real or natural vitamin at all and should never be used in the diet.  I dunno how true that is....YET!!!  LOL  Oh, but I will know soon enough!  LOL If all your B vits are GOOD for now...JUST STOP taking them!  And maybe on B12 for now. Hopefully that's all you have to do .  I read somewhere that you have to take B-6 for a very long time to cause nerve damage...But Your levels are SERIOUSLY high...Like 5 times too high!  Check out your protein drinks and make sure they are not adding extra vitamins to your diet!  That was one of the things my NUT stressed a lot about protein powders and bars...She didn't want anyone using the fortified ones and that's why I won't touch Slimfast or any of those type "daily supplement or meal replacement" drinks! I've gotten a bit lax on that...but time to tighten up on my old rules again! Holy moly Dana...You have me reeling!  I don't know how I can wait another four months to have my vitamins checked...One week til I get the iron checked...and 4 months on the vits!  OY!  I'm going to be a total basket case!  LOL I never used to worry about these sorts of things...It's all very scary. I don't pray...but I'm praying for you girlie! Be blessed!  Be well!

Hi Dana! As you know, I don't know a whole lot about vits, but the one thing I do know is that B6 can cause alot of problems if too much is taken. I take 1 daily, but my labs have always come out within normal range. I would definitely cut back on that  and talk to your dr about it. Hope you find out about your vit D levels too!

FYI  Seems it takes longer for Vit D labs to come back.  It took at least a week for mine to get back. Patricia

I don't know a thing about vitamin B 6.  I didn't get a lab report back on mine. 6 months ago my vitamin D was low. I was told to add 500 unit/mg/? to my daily vitamin regimine. The bariatric mutli-vitamin changed the formula to add an extra 500. Tis time my vitamin D id loww end of normal. I hope it doesn't take long to sort it all out for and to find out your Vit D values. Too much vitamin B6 can result in nerve damage to the arms and legs. This neuropathy is usually related to high intake of vitamin B6 from supplements, [28] and is reversible when supplementation is stopped. According to the Institute of Medicine, "Several reports show sensory neuropathy at doses lower than 500 mg per day" [12]. As previously mentioned, the Food and Nutrition Board of the Institute of Medicine has established an upper tolerable intake level (UL) for vitamin B6 of 100 mg per day for all adults [12]. "As intake increases above the UL, the risk of adverse effects increases [12]." from the NIH website. http://ods.od.nih.gov/factsheets/vitaminb6.asp#h7 Dana, You should stop your vitamins for now and discuss with your doc about time frames and retesting.  Hopefully, you have not developed any problems. Best to you, Cindy
