Maintaining Weight? (Edited)

Had to edit original post.  Seems I had my starting weight as only 258 not 458. Seems I had a blonde moment.  I keep telling my girlfriend that all the blonde hair dye she uses is killing my brain cells too.
Hey Folks, I have a question?  I am currently 19 months post-op from my RNY and have lost 239 pounds.  Started at 458 on the day of surgery and am currently at 219.  several months ago when I saw my surgeon I was 249 and he said he was satisfied and I could stop if I wanted.  I told him I wanted to lose a little more and he was fine with it.  The next time I saw him I was at 239 and he said to stop there. I dropped a bit further down to where I was holding steady at 226-231 from week to week.  then several weeks ago I started dropping again.  granted I was sick for a week or so and that could account for some of it.  I went as low as 213 and have rebounded to 219 currently. Since surgery I have developed Reactive Hypoglycemia which my Internist confirmed with a Glucose Tolerance Test.  I eat 6-8 small meals a day and am careful not to consume simple carbs in order to keep my blood sugar stable. My question is:  How do I maintain my current weight and not drop any more weight?  I am constantly eating and feel like I eat more than I should be.  Any advice would be helpful. Thanks, -Steve

I have never had this problem personally, but maybe you could try adding a higher calorie food into your day?  Maybe meat that has a bit more fat content.  Going from FF or SF to low fat or real sugar, (if you don't dump)   For example if it were me,  I make my own FF SF proteing pudding,  I would go from FF milk to whole milk and maybe add extra protein powder for calories as well as protein. So you don't really have to eat more just change the "count" of what you are eating. From everything I have read you only want to go up about 100 cal a day until you find the spot that lets you maintain without gain. And, please I don't mean to sound like the typo police but could you edit your post?  I am sure that some of the numbers are typos cause otherwise you started at 258 lost 239 and are currently at 219.....lol....my poor head doesn't do numbers well and these are throwing me for loop!   Again not trying to be typo police but.....thank you in advance!

Thanks for noticing the glitch in the numbers.  Guess I just have a hard time admitting I weighed that much.  Plus with those numbers I would be non-existent. I have to follow a low/complex carb diet.  I dont worry about fat free or sugar free foods since I dont dump. I just stick to foods that are low carb or the right kind.  However I can't add more sugar in because of the Reactive Hypoglycemia.  It will cause my sugar to jump and then crash.  The protein drinks are not a bad idea though.  My doc told me about 6 months ago that I could stop them if I wanted and just eat more but maybe adding them back in would help. Thanks

I'm having the same issues with keeping at a healthy weight also. Most WLS patients only lose 1/3 of their weight but apparently, you and I were over achievers. I'm 21 months out right now. I have been told that over time the intestines will "regrow" silia and we'll have the ability to absorb more things from our food but I've also been told that I should increase my intake. I want to do that but I'm afraid to do it too well and gain "all of it" back. It's a real fear for us, at least for me. So whatever I do, I want to do it SLOWLY...so I'm still in control. At this point, I'm not sure how exactly to increase or maintain but I chart all my food on a food journal (fitday) and keep track of calories, fat, carbs and protein. I concentrate mostly on protein and calories. I tend to dump on sugar and don't do well with breads or pastas or rice so I stay away from those. I do have snacks inbetween my meals (mini-meals). I shoot for about 2300 calories a day and at least 120 grams of protein. Fat and carbs sort of follow along. I do try and stay away from white carbs. I tend to have hypoglycemic moments with those.  How did you fare on the GTT? I can't do those anymore. When they give me the sugar water, I barf and then the blood sugar spikes and then I almost black out...Great fun! You've done such an awesome job! Isn't it wonderful to eat to LIVE instead of living to EAT?

Yes, RNY worked for me but it also requires a lot of work from me!

Fasting sugar was 102.  Started the test and an hour later sugar was 212 and an hour after that was 52.  At the end of the third hour sugar was back to 92.

You did better than me. 89 before the test, 300 during and 27 after an hour...I was just sick right after the syrup (barfing) and then close to blacking out...Horrible stuff.

Hi Steve, first off congratulations on the weight loss. I would also say add some protein shakes to your day.....it's pretty easy to add calories and extra protein that way without feeling stuffed and uncomfortable by adding more food. Sorry to hear about the reactive hypoglycemia, it's not a fun situation.  I am thankful I've only had a little of the sugar drop situation and the fuzzy head and didn't like it at all.  Fortunately I am now aware of what foods cause it for me and just stay away from them.

Your body will stabalize out. I remember worrying I would get too skinny, but it equalized. I am glad I went lower and moved up to where I'm maintaining now. maintaining is hard, so don't develop bad habits now. I agree with Dana, increase the protein and good complex carbs or the simple carbs you can eat. Don't just try to gain with bad habits, that only is opening a pandoras box! good job on the weight loss, that is amazing!!!!!
