Blueberries and lowfat cottage cheese??

I am nearly two years post-op and having a terrible time right now.  I am up 10 pounds (weighed in at 237 this morning) since my all-time low weight (227).  I know I've been eating poorly and really want to start losing weight again.  My goal weight is 200 pounds.  I am 5'11" and a large framed girl, so I would be exstatic to weigh 200 pounds! Onto my question.... I am trying to eat WAY less carbs (not cut them out completely, but make wise decisions and try to only eat the good carbs)  I have found that I absolutley LOVE fresh blueberries with lowfat (1%) cottage cheese.  I've been eating 1/2 cup of each in the mornings for breakfast, and sometimes 1/2 cup of each during lunch (or for a snack).  I am bad about over doing it, with anything!  Is this meal something I should restrain myself on?  If I had this 2-3 times a day, is that bad? It's so hard finding GOOD foods that I enjoy eating, so I'm trying my best to stick with things I know I like and I know are good for me.  But don't want to over do it....

Tiffany, I guess it would depend on what else you were eating during the day.  It looks as if the portion size is good...so I wouldn't worry about that.  For a snack, I think it's a decent choice... Another variation of the same thing is to add vanilla flavored protein powder (1/2 scoop) to your cottage cheese (2/3 cup), ff skim milk (1 tablespoon) a splash of vanilla extract and a touch of splenda and blend it until smooth.  I put that over strawberries and it's like a clotted cream.  Amazing! Another thing to look into is getting the Fat free rather than 1% if you're trying to lose...it's probably only a couple of grams of fat, but I've found the FF tastes just as good. Not sure if this has helped any, but it's just my two cents worth =) ~Lisa

Tiffany, I think it is an excellent choice of both protein, and fiber/carbs. Blueberries are low on the glycemic index. Just be sure to use the low fat cottage cheese to make it even healthier for you.

I eat cottage cheese with berries almost every single day; it's a great snack for post-WLS folks.  I also mix in 2-4 tbsp. of sugar-free preserves, depending on how much cottage cheese I'm having, along with a packet or two of Splenda.  This is hands-down my favorite snack.  By the way, when fresh blueberries are too expensive or just aren't available, I use diced strawberries.  If berries are just totally outrageous, I skip them entirely and just have the sugar-free preserves and Splenda.   If you get burned out on cottage cheese, try greek-style yogurt.  Fage is fabulous - a 5-6 oz. serving of their 2% yogurt has about 130 calories and 17 grams of protein.  Greek-style yogurt is much thicker and tangier than regular yogurt, and it's generally unflavored.  (Trader Joe's sells flavored Greek-style yogurt, but I've never seen it anywhere else.)  I eat this pretty much the same way I do cottage cheese - add a couple packets of Splenda, thrown in some berries, maybe some granola or Mueslix cereal and enjoy!   Enjoy your new-found healthy treats!   Kellie

Tiffany, I agree with the other posters, IMO this is a good breakfast or snack.  Blueberries, strawberries, rasberries are all low gylcemic fruits and one that I'll choose over many others anyday. I go through spells where I eat cottage cheese everyday, usually with Splenda or Vanilla protein powder.  I also recommend the FF since the taste is very similar to 1% and you are lowering the fat intake while to you try to lose. Good luck!

Yep...that's really nice...I'm into greek yogurt rather than cottage cheese for the extra protein (sometimes cottage cheese doesn't agree with me so it's my other choice)...But remember these are slider foods too so you probably won't stay very satisfied with this...Make sure you get some dense proteins as your main meals...This way you will want less snacks...(I love my snacks...so I'm not judging! I eat entirely too many and probably am considered a grazer) Like I gives a poo!  When I graze on 3000 calories a day...Then I'll try to feel bad!  I eat any berries by the cup full daily or even twice daily, when they are in season.  The tricky thing about eating too many snacks daily is they sometimes begin to get replaced with bad choices...So keep some other good choice back ups for those days you run out of cottage cheese or blueberries!  :)   I wish you much luck with meeting your new goal!

I'm a low-fat cottage cheese freak!  I like it just fine plain w/ some fruit tossed in, but my current obsession is this:  shake in a little sf/ff Jello instant pudding (dry) (cheesecake flavor) and a little sf/ff (dry) Jello (any flavor, but I like strawberry or cherry).  Then some fruit--any--love strawberry.  I am crazy about this simple concoction, and it fills me up!

Always,
Jo

I've read all these posts and now I've got to go back to the store and get some cottage cheese and bluberries. I haven't tried that yet, but it sure sounds good. My-friend-the-health-nut always puts a couple of strawberries in her Fiber One yogurt, and that looks good too.

Doesn't sound bad to me.  Have you tried blueberries with plain nonfat yogurt?  I add a little Splenda to the yogurt and sometimes a little vanilla extract and eat it with either blueberries, blackberries, or sliced strawberries.  All are delicious and good for you.
