5 DPT (modified) My Doctor's Advice
Ok I stated the 5 dpt on Monday 4/14/08 did my shakes and then around 7pm I needed REAL food. So I had a small salad of different greens a sliced tomato and balsamic dressing. Tuesday came and I had protein oatmeal for breakfast and protein shakes throughout the day. At night I had my yearly appointment with gastric doctor. I brought in the 5 day pouch test to review with him. We went over every day on the test together, the negative he had was the 2 first days of all liquids, and he did not like this. According to him we are NOT resetting our pouches but resetting our mind and habits. Our pouch does not need resetting, the size it is has not really changed that much from the day of the surgery but what has change is the way we eat. We have gone back to the foods that made us heavy to begin with. (chips, candy, sweets, and plenty of carbs), these are also foods that break-up easy in the pouch and slide down. He said we need to reset our minds. He said he agrees with many of points in the 5 day test especially Day 5 (solid protein) and not drinking water prior to or after a meal or drinking while eating. He said what we need to do is have solid dense protein first and then if still not feeling full then have some carbs as in vegetables only. He also said we should use the protein shakes as our snacks for in-between meals, this will get in the extra water and protein that we need, he also likes the SF pudding but not right after eating as this will try to slide down and push the solid food through. He said if you feel you need something salty, eat some nuts and if you need something sweet then have the pudding.
So I listen to my doctor and for the next day or two I had my protein oatmeal with a cut-up apple in it (could not eat the whole thing) or one day a 2 egg omelet loaded with vegs, had my protein shakes in between meals, lunch is a salad of greens, tomato with a protein on top (either tuna or chicken), dinner will be a solid protein and vegs. For nighttime snack a SF pudding.
Actually since doing this I feel much better, not tired and believe it I feel full right away and do not finish my meals. So I stepped on the scale today and have lost 8 pounds since Monday, the main thing is I feel better, I am not starving or even hungry. I am making sure I am getting in the water and any food that goes into my mouth has nutrition value to it.
I have to be honest I did the 5 dpt during the summer and did very well, but eventually went back to old habits and gained the weight I lost back and then some. So this time I determined to reset my mind and eating habits and move forward. Laura
