Ok I am really down now.. I had my  surgery almost one year ago (April 16, 2007)   I had a wonderful start, I lost 112 lbs in 7 MONTHS!!  went from 264 to 152 it really was incredible.. but ever since November I haven't lost a pound.. in fact I was juggling 4 pounds till a month ago.. Everyone told me it was just my body's way of catching up, not to panic it will come off (my last 20 pounds) I have heard it all tried it all.. nothing.. and now I am gaining weight.. I am at 160 this morning.. and have been form 158 to 160 all month.. the strangest thing of all I have noticed is that my portion control is almost back to where it was before the surgery... I NEVER eat sugar and most of my carbs are from veggies and wheat.. I go to the doc in 2 weeks and want to know if anyone else is this way only a year out... how much can you eat.. I don't feel my pouch any more and yes I did the 5 day pouch test diet and had no porblem with it and didn't lose a single pound just stayed in my usual 4 pounds.. any and all help would be appreciated ty Sheila

The honeymoon period is over, and now you really have to work your mind, as well as your body.  I lost 100 pounds in 7 months post op too. It took another several months to lose another 20 pounds.  So, since surgery date of May 10, 2006, I've lost 120 pounds. My weight goes up and down about 2 pounds, and that seems to be normal from speaking with dozens of post op RNY patients at the 3 support meetings I attend each month.  Hate to be the bearer of bad news, but---most people get to about 15% above their ideal weight.  Some may lose down to an ideal weight, but will regain some back. Yes your appetite may come back and you may want larger portions a year out.  Daily exercise like just plain walking is needed on almost a daily basis. Good water intake. Taking vitamins and calcium citrate. Portion control and food choices are probably your problem. You'll need to be vigilant in reading labels.  If you eat a lot of fruit--fruits like watermellon, grapes, and pinneaple have high natural sugar content.  A good site for information on food nutrition is www.whfoods.com and there are charts on best protein sources, iron sources, etc. within this site. If you tend to graze, find a healthier snack. I get dried peas--they're crunch, a green veggie, and the best part is there is 6 grams of protein per 1/4 cup of them.  I'm not the perfect example of total control over what I eat, but I do manage to get in my exercise, and stay within a narrow weight margin. Oh, I use liquid vitamins and powdered calcium citrate--noted on my profile page.

Are you sure you need to lose that much more? I mean you don't say if you're short or tall or whether you exercise at all. i know a girl on the regular RNY board who is at the gym and kick boxing several times a week that is the same height as me (5 ft 5) and she weighs about that. See, that number on the scale just is one fact. How tall you are and how fit or how much muscle you have are other facts...You can't go by just one number. If you don't need to lose any more and you feel good, how can that be bad?

AND...What about loose skin? Do you have alot of that? I was figuring the other day that if I had the loose skin removed, I'd lose another 5-10 pounds...Yikes, that would put me way under a normal BMI..

Yes, RNY worked for me but it also requires a lot of work from me!

Hi thanks for the help.. I am 5'4" my bmi at a normal would be 145.. But that would be at the high end. Fortunately I have no skin issues (thank god). But Yes my activity level is not to my liking.. I live in Indiana and it is COLD here.. so I am very hum drum.. I go to curves 6 days a week. and walk my dog about a mile a day which takes 15 minutes.. I know I could really kick it up a notch.. but with consuming 1000 to 1200 calories per day and taking prenatal vitamins daily, and consuming at least 60g's of protein,  I am doing exactally as my doctor and dietition suggests to lose weight and nothing is helping.. I guess I would be ok with the 152 but am really freaking out with 160 in the past I tended to lose easily and gain back as much as 20 pounds a month (on the diet I used to lose the weight)  or more and am so scared to do it all again... ty for the support

Curves six days a week and walking the dog each day is alot. Probably burning off more than half of that 1000 calories a day, I'd guess. Especially if it's cold outside when you're walking. I can sure understand not wanting to lose control after going through the surgery. That's why I'm so overly obessive about gaining anything...Almost bordering on unhealthy.  I've seen people early out who are at a stall and what they do is up the protein to 100. That means no carbs (because frankly, you can't if you want more protein) and it gets them moving off of a stall. For some reason the body sees the protein as a go-ahead to let go of the weight.

I personally believe that a few pounds gain after initial weight loss is pretty normal. (maybe not all of us gain anything back and some continue to lose a pound or two every several months)  I've heard it time and time again that many people will begin gaining back a little weight after they hit their lowest weight and settle in around 5-10 lbs heavier than that low weight.  That was me...Got to goal and within a few days I went up two pounds and I was working out big time!  I eventually gained 7 lbs and never did lose it completely...but maintain within 5 lbs of my new weight.  In the summer I go down a few lbs and winter I go up... My portions are no where near before surgery...and I recently had to quit exercising for temporary health reasons...so that plays a huge part, I truly believe! You might consider stepping up in exercise to lose a those few pounds in addition to watching how you are eating.  I know once I get back to a more active life...I will drop a few more  lbs in time for bathing suit season!  I maintain at about 165...and get down to 160-162 in summer...Usually!  I'm quite content at my weight as 160 was my goal anyway...but many people prefer to be much smaller...I personally don't think I am built to be a light weight...I guess it's all a matter of how YOU feel inside about your outside.  I wish you the best...
