How do you remember your supplements?

Thank you Bekah for reminding us all how important is is to take our supplements. That post is getting mightly long so I thought I'd start a new one. I'd like to discuss how to get our supplements in without fail. I'm good about it during the week but fail to get some of the "less important" supplements on the weekends. Here is how I remember the important ones. Every morning after I get dressed, I make it a habit to stop by my night stand and count out all my supplements for the day. Then I put them in my pockets -- calcium on the right and vitamins on the left. I put my hands in my pockets during the day and it hits me, "oh my gosh is it time to take a calcium?" I also take omega-3 and iron supplements during the work week. Its tough for me to remember these because I'm out of room in my pockets for the extras. So...How to you make sure you get your vitamins and supplements everyday?

I keep my multi, B vits and birth control all on the kitchen counter.. no matter the day of the week I am always in there in the morning for one reason or another so I take them in.  For calcium I keep a bottle on the kitchen counter but also one in my desk at work. Since I am at work 5 days a week right when I sit down I take out 2 tabs and sit them on my desk... I take 1 mid morning and 1 mid afternoon... hard to forget since they are sitting next to my water bottle I am sip sip sipping on all day. As for the weekend when it comes to calcium I take it when I remember too... its not as 'on schedule' as during the workweek but I get in what I need!

I have a long pill taking container that I fill once a week...It's labeled Monday thru Sunday (It's about as thick as a protein bar and a little longer!  So it fits nice ino my handbag (Or I just dump the days worth in a snack bag and take with me... Usually on Sundays I fill up each days worth of stuff.  Some things I take only once a week so it's much easier to remember if I took it or not.  Some of the bigger vitamins supps (like my calcium, I keep in the bottle and take first thing in the morning and again sometime before bed.  Once you get on a schdule it's a habit in only three days...It's easy to keep track when you have a good system.  I got my pill box at Walmart in the script and vitamins section ...It keeps me straight!  I cleaned out a kitchen drawer to put all the vitamins into...but I think I need a cabinet instead!  The bottles got bigger.... Then there are the protein powder containers one in chocolate and one in vanilla....and the mini food processor and the hand mixer !!!! My kitchen is starting to look like a GNC because I am too lazy to put it away some days...because I know I'm just gonna pull it all back out anyway!  LOL  I need a special cabinet that is all organized and easy to get to.  Then I can have my kitchen counters back and neat and orderliness again!

I have my daily multi vits and B12 sitting in my bedroom on the night stand right by my water (I sometimes get up in the middle of night for a drink) and so in the Morn right away I take them. I have my Omega 3's in the Kitchen so that when I feel a snack attack come on I take them and drink more water. I have my Calcium and Vit D down stairs and up stairs so that when I am wondering around cleaning or what not I see them and take them in the afternoon.   THEN at night right before bed I take more calcium and vit D (ps....they say that calcium will naturally help you sleep and since I started taking them at night ahhhhhhh!) Find what works for you and do it!! Hugs!

Pill box separators are good for times when you're in a specific place. I place my pill box setup in my night stand. I get up take morning pills out for consumption. Same for evening pills when I retire.  I can set a kitchen timer to go off in so many hours for mid morning pills and reset for other times during the day. There are also portable pill timers, that have platic cases attached to them. I think you can get them as local medical supply places. These are primarily for "older people" who need to be reminded when to take a pill. The timers can be set for 6-7 times a day, and the pills are in the plastic section boxed attached to the timer.  There are also watches that have multiple alarms that can be set--more for the people at work or travelling.

I take most of my suppliments around meal times....except iron, which I take on an empty stomach when I wake up.  If i'm going to be out all day, I throw all of my suppliments in a snack sized ziplock (they are about 1/2 the size of a sandwich ziplock)....and I pop them throughout the day.  On the rare occassion I "forget to take a dose" I take whatever is left at the end of the day.  Because absorbing a bit of something taken, is better then absorbing nothing of something not taken.   Again for the most part I take my suppliments around meal times, so I never forget...it's habit. If I'm eating, I'm supplementing.  I eat several small meals during the day, so every time I eat something, I reach for a supplement (because it's usually time for one).

I've been doing this a way long time, but the system I've developed works like so:
we started on doc program way back when
got labs
tweaked to fit
load vites for 30 days (there are 2 of us) into ziplocs

Now, fast fwd more than 10 yrs.

Vites have been tweaked all along to fit labs
we load 90 days EACH (takes maybe 6 hrs) into ziplocs
includes rx and vites

He takes his in 3 gobs, morning, night and iron

I take mine in 5 gobs. 4 calcium and everything groups, 1 iron gob

I take pills with food, food with pills. I had a life long history of ulcer, so I've never taken pills on empty. The saliva helps break them down, anyway, so no big deal. I take iron + C with fruit or veggie only.

So, the end result is if I have no pills to take, I get no more food. My meals are used up. If I stil h ave pills, I need to eat one more meal/snack.

I use a day of the week pill box. I load it once a week and put it by my toothbru****ake my AM stuff when I brush, then take my 2 calcium tabs and put them in my pocket. I 'find' them there later and take one. Then the other when I change out of my work clothes at night. It works for me.
