May I have some pre-surgery advice?

Hi, I have completed all of my evaluations, have the final authorization from the insurance company, and am waiting "frantically" for the call for the pre-op appointment.   I have about 2 weeks of Medifast shakes left over from my last venture at losing weight.  Should I use these or actually consume food?  I want to lost the necessary weight before this appointment.   Thanks, JDMAC21

I wish I could advise you on how to lose weight. I just couldn't do it. In the 3 months leading up to my RNY, I lost 3 stinking pounds and I think most of that was water. That was with a 1200 calorie diet and working out with a little guy at a gym I called Hitler. Before that I was on WW and started off at 317, dropped to about 300 and got back up to 325, all while following the point system. I'm sure no help when it comes to losing weight. I bet most people would advise you to ask your doctor. A lot of them are picky-eunice about what their patients do, and most require a liquid diet before surgery. I only had to do it 2 days, but I've known people who had to do it for about a month.

I was told to go low on the carbs so that the liver would not be as large. I was also told to not eat like it was my last meal I stopped drinking soda my downfall Before anything went to my mouth I kept saying god choice or bad choice. I didn't have any shakes or anything Call you doctor and ask Good luck and God Bless You!! This is the best thing you will ever do for yourself! kim

I think this is a question would best be answered by your surgeon. Some surgeons require a liquid diet for a couple weeks before WLS. Others a couple days and some, like mine, don't require any special diet. For all anyone knows, he may have a waiting list of a month for surgery. Personally, I couldn't follow a liquid diet for that long. So check with your surgeon's office and see what they have to say about dieting prior to surgery and the waiting time for surgery. Then you can decide from there.
