Gum Chewing

I think it depends on how long you've been out. It is a big no no.  If you swallow the gum after surgery, it can get caught up in your intestines. At least that's what I read. Which BTW bummed me out, cause I am currently an avid gum chewer lol. And I can't say I haven't swallowed it a time or two either. Anyhow, I have been doing alot of research because I am still waiting to go in to have my surgery, and I did read somewhere that it is a big no no. If I run across the article a little later today, I'll post the info and where it came from.  Thanks for your time, Frankie

Thanks Frankie and everyone else who is responding to my post. I am 17 months post op and I have been chewing gum for about 6 months. I NEVER swallow it but I chew alot of gum since I find it never holds its flavor too long. I love Orbit bubblemint the best!!! I only buy it on sale to ration it out but I worry that I am still doing something harmful as far as gas is concerned. If I chew too much, the gas is awful!!! I know I have an addiction to gum...I never chew it in the house, mostly in the car and sometimes at work!

THE SUGAR ALCOHOL!!!!!!! UGH ..why do they put sugar alcohol in every single freaken piece of gum that doesn't taste like watermellon?????? I'm so sensitive to sugar alcohol it....it's insane....so yeah if i chew gum (with sugar alcohol) i'm gassy for 2 or 3 days....and for a DSer that can be dangerous...lol. Scott

The gas I get is the "loud, smelly" kind and it can be very embarrassing, depending on where I am. Sugar alcohols are really bad but I guess if they didn't put them in the gum would taste horrendous! I wish I could be like my son and take one piece a day!

Anyone know if chewing too much gum is bad for your health, bariatric patients, aside?

I was told not to.  That being said, I've been chewing it since about 6 months post-op.  It satisfies my twinges of head hunger.  I haven't swallowed any gum since I was a kid.

I chew gum after meals because I don't drink liquids until at least half an hour after a meal.  My first dental checkup after my RNY was a disaster -- teeth and gums were sore and hard to clean (never a problem for me before or since).  I wasn't chewing gum at that time and of course wasn't drinking with or just after meals.  So I chew it to help clean my teeth when brushing after every meal or snack isn't practical.  No problems with dental cleanings since.

Im one month out and my nut said that it was ok to chew again, provided that I didnt swallow it.  But...sadly, when I chewed a couple of times, I got horribly gassy!  I think the way I chew had me swallowing lots of air?  I burped for almost an hour.  I gave all my gum away and decided to stick to small sugar free mints for a while.  But I'm guessing that this, like everything else, is another "everyone is different" situation.
