Maintaining Weight Loss with Exercise
Just curious as to how much exercise you are all doing to maintain your weight loss...I go to the gym about 5x a week and am spending time doing the elliptical (20-30 min), bike and strength training. I try to do a few exercise classes a week if I can...so I wonder if this is enough because I feel like I am eating all the time and am fearful of gaining back.
I don't "work out" I hate sweating....but I am a very active person, normally and swim a lot in the summer...Walk a lot in the winter...For the same reasons as you...fear of gaining weight. I measure my food to get a visual of what I should eat per meal or snack. I have a great eye for how much my food is...so I just check some things on the scale to be sure and randomly do a guessing game and see how close I get and I'm usually right on...Though fish always shocks me how light it is...and I am always wrong on my weight guesses...
When it's summer...I don't even know how much I eat but it's a lot! I must need it for the amount of calories I must burn...I always ALWAYS lose weight in the summer...and gain a little in the winter.
If you slow down on exercise, you might want to cut some calories as well...My body does that automatically usually...but as long as you have a healthy fear of gain and stay on top of it, you should be fine.
Good luck
Anita
PS: I gained 10+ lbs last winter and was really worried...but I knew what I was out of control...I ate mindlessly and with stuff I knew was bad...so that was totally my own doing. You just know when you are being bad!!!!...and if you aren't honest with yourself and get on top of it...It will continue until you grab control back and work hard to lose it and eat right. OH..the mind games we play with ourselves!
Sheri,
I have a pilates reformer at home so I try and doing 23 min daily, sometimes 2 x a day, i also have a gazelle which is a glider off the floor so I am walk without thumping on my joints ands I usually try to get in at least 10-20 min when possible but sometimes I don't make it at all so I adjust my calories. I have not had a regain and am 3yr postop.
Current weight:120 and still 5'4
I read somewhere (don't remember where) that WLS patients who exercise regularly have a 75% better record of keeping the weight off than those that don't, so that's a good enough reason to keep doing it. I do an hour every morning - 30 minutes cardio and 30 minutes weight & resistance. I'm sure we'll have ups and downs with our weight, but I do believe the exercise is very, very important and will help us a lot.
Hmm, I don't know that it will help your skin tighten up completely, because it hasn't made mine go away, but mine has gotten better lately. I'm pretty sensitive about my arms, and I'm going to wear sleeveless tops this summer if it hairlips Grandma. I've got some definition there, even a little cut between the muscles in my upper arm. But then there's this "growth" that flops down underneath. I'm 47 and I don't know many women my age that don't have some flop, even those that haven't lost any weight. People have noticed my muscles and I think my arms do look better with the exercise. I spend about 10 minutes on them. I use 10-pound weights (started off with food cans, and I'm planning to go up to 12 or 15 pound weights soon). I do bicep curls, lat rows, military presses and squats (ouch), tricep pumps, push-ups, and my new thing is to lay on the treadmill and pull up on the place where you hang your wet clothes. I try to do 30 of those (ouch again). I was getting so weak. When I was 340 pounds I couldn't move around much but I was strong as a horse. I do a lot of yard work and other things, and I've noticed how much easier it is with my new little muscles. I would definitely give it a try.
