iron and heartburn
good easter morning
is anyone out there having a problem with iron supplements causing hearburn??
im suffering and worried, because i already have an ulcer that i take prevacid for.
now after three weeks of iron supplement, im having awful heartburn again.. im thinking the two problems could be related
any thoughts
thanks, jacki
Jacki...
I was just reading that there is a drug interaction between Lansoprazole (Prevaid) and Iron (Info found on Heathline.com)...
Because prevacid "prevents acid" in an already low acid pouch...you are going to have trouble absorbing vitamins that need stomach acid to absorb such as B-12 and Iron. You might talk to your doctor about B-12 injections to insure you do not become deficient there...
Here's that link for Healthline! I knew I saw it there! I take a prevacid every now and then when I feel a random acidy feeling, but haven't needed to in a good year or so....

I think you need to talk to your doctor as soon as possible...
Good Luck

I'd consult your doctor. If there is an interaction between the iron and the Prevacid, then maybe there's an alternative medication that won't cause the problem. Do you take them together? Maybe if you spread out the time difference between the two, that might help. Last suggestion is to maybe eat something with your iron. That might help the hearburn You also said "heartburn again", so what caused it last time?

Jacki,
What iron supplement are you taking? Most docs prescribe/tell folks to take a ferrous sulfate - and well... ferrous sulfate is KNOWN to cause gastric irritation and wouldn't be good for a WLS patient let alone one with an ulcer especially in doses we might need.
I'm doing vitalady's tender iron which is carbonyl iron and my labs seems to have done well with it. I had been taking vitron-c from CVS (per my nuts since surgery) and my labs were dropping over time with that and now are doing better since I switched. Plus the tender iron can be chewed and I think that really helps with absorption.
Good luck!
Kathy

thanks kathy
i was taking the vitron c for the past three or so weeks now and i think the iron and the vit C have set my ulcer off again.
i bought another one at store yesterday but also a ferrous compound. im going to call my doc and may look into the one from vita lady. ive read lots of positive things about it.
thanks, jacki
