Any recommendations for fatige?

I have been battling fatige for a while.  At first, I thought it was related to my weight.  Then I lost 100 pounds with RNY gastric bypass.  I am on B12 injections and iron infusions but still have fatigue.  I am also cold all the time.  I've had my thyroid checked as recent as 9 months ago (4 months post-op) and it has always been normal.  Has anyone else battled fatigue that doesn't seem to go away?  Any words of advice would be appreciated! ...Jill

Sorry to hear of your plight.  I've been diagnosed with CFS (Chronic Fatigue Syndrome) and  FMS (Fibromyalgia) since 1996.  Now in the midst of workup for celiac sprue and lupus.  The fatigue is horrible.  And since none of this is visible, it is hard to explain and hard to accept.  I hope your resolves and you are able to resume a normal life.  Mine all started after a major surgery in the early 90's.  Cindy

Jill are you getting enough protein? If I don't get 80-100 grams I am dead tired. Also consuming too many carbs will make you tired. I also have had iron infusions and I take 2 B12 injections per week and that 2nd shot is what made all the difference for me with my ferritin holding for the fist time in my life.  ~Ginny

I'm gonna watch my protein intake closely.  Also, my B12 is written for every other week but I've taken it once a month because I thought that was the correct dose.  I'll try to up it to every other week and see if that helps.  Thanks for your input! ...Jill

call your dr...after being on infusions for years I did some research and asked my hematologist if I could do twice a week since I was already one once a week...he pondered and finally said try it and I will be darned...seems like it is helping my ferritin stay up...I started doing two a week last June and when I finished my infusion my iron was 300 and started to come darn, however this past Dec it started to reverse and go back up so for first time in my life since childhood my iron is stable. Only other things is protein i increased about 20 grams and I take 4grams of Lovaza which is a script for Omega's every day. I feel its the increased B12 that is working and I have suffered with Chronic Fatigue and Epsiten Barr Virus since my 20's and I am 58 now...best I ever felt. My oncologist/hematolgist told me he is going try this on some other patients since it worked so well for me, it can't hurt its only B12 and high B12 will not hurt you. Omega is good for you for many things and may help balance you out. Talk to your dr. If you need anything just drop me an email.

What thyroid test did they do? If they just did the Tsh - then you really haven't had your thyroid checked. Have the FreeT3 & Free T4 checked. If the 3 is on the low side, your 4 is probably not turning into 3 enough - there is an enzyme that makes the T4 loose a link and turn into T3. Just testing the Tsh won't show this. A good book that explains it is Hypothyroidism Type 2 by Dr. Mark Starr (http://www.type2hypothyroidism.com/). Just a thought - they told me my thyroid was normal for years and it turned out it wasn't - then my nails started getting ridges in them and I did some research of my own to find out what the problem was. Good luck, Diona

It's interesting that you brought this up.  I was researching my symptoms and this is exactly what I thought of after a google session last night.  I have puffy eyes, occassional muscles aches, fatigue, intolerance to cold, and a few other minor things that seem to be associated with type 2 hypothyroidism.  I'm gonna get this book and look into it.  Thanks for bringing that up! ...Jill

These symptoms are the same for Iron deficiency too...You should get a FULL blood lab work up...if you haven't...( didn't get my labs for 2 years and in that time I went from great to bad)  I even looked back at other labs and no one tested my iron for years! Not even my surgeon...Weird. I have no idea how long I have actually been low or worse anemic like I am now. My doc thought for sure I was B-12 deficient...but found I was anemic and very magnesium deficient...My B-12 test is over the top.. high!  But so far there is no known toxicity in B-12 so I'm happy with it being high considering all my other vits are borderline or deficient in many places. I asked my doc to run all kinds of labs recommended by people here! I took it to my doc who was more than happy to run them all for me.  I'm soooo glad I did. Because my symtoms I ignored and thought I was just being lazy and shrugged off the minor symtoms as a normal WLS type problems.

So what do you take now for the hypothyroidism type II.  I saw my doc last July with what I felt like was hypothyroid.  He did full blood work and checked everything.  All my bloodwork came back okay.  But I notice I have ridges in my nails really bad, and I seem to have all the symptoms associated with hypothyroidism. I was shocked my bloodwork was good. Now I am questioning that.   Melissa
