Anyone had problems with your liver after surgery?
I had my surgery in April 07 and 2wks postop I started urinating brown so I went to my primary dr to find that I had extremely high liver enzyme levels and they put me back in the hospital for more tests. They could find the reason but my liver was dumping bile into my system rather than into my intestine. After about 6 months I was feeling more normal and it seemed to have healed itself. I went yesterday for pre-op blood work to start some plastic surgery and they called this morning that my liver enzymes where climbing up again. I called my WLS surgeon and he is setting up an appt with a liver specialist.
I have never had any liver problems before the surgery.
Anyone else having problems?

Sharlene,
Was your glabladder removed when you had RNY or do you stil have it? How's your cholesterol profile HDL/LDL ands your trigycerides? High liver enzymes can be quite a few things.
Mine used to show high never had any of above problems but I had mono and epstien barr virus several attacks over yrs and this affects the liver...over yrs. it had nothing to do with WLS surgery.
Current weight:120 and still 5'4
I had elevated liver enzymes on my 1, 3, and 6 month labs - got to 3 x normal value but no symptoms. They retested at 7 months and back to normal. They think I might have had a case of Hepatitis A. We're just going to keep an eye on it. I go back in 2 months for my 12 month labs and hopefully they stay in normal range. Good luck - hope it's nothing serious!

Kathy,
Do you know how long that shows up on our liver tests? I had a bloody mary at a party on Saturday evening and then they did my blood work on Thursday. Any possibility that that might have elevated my levels after that length of time? I guess I am grabbing at straws. But it might be worth a mention.
All I can tell you is I thought I was having a heart attack and they took me to the emergency room. My live enzymes were over 800. They had never seen numbers that high unless there was liver damage and or cancer, tumor or something. This facility didn't have a clue about WLS.
They saw scars from my PS and thought I had been in an accident...
How long it took my numbers to go down and or that to get out of my system I really don't. I bet your bariatric surgeon would know. That was who told me I didn't need a liver specialist it was the wine. I have not had another attack since so I know he is right....
Good luck to you!!!
Take care,
Kathy

Wow, that's fast scheduling for plastics (only a year post-op).
I had elevated liver enzymes on my post-op blood work for about a year post-op. I recall checking the library here and finding that elevated liver enzymes are not uncommon with people experiencing rapid weight loss after WLS. In time, everything stabilized. You might be "rushing the cadence" a bit here.

Hi all...
I have researched this a lot (because I have experienced elevated liver enzymes PRE-op). In my case, it is the early stages of "fatty liver" (fat cells infiltrate the liver), confirmed only by ultrasound.
I've learned that rapid weight loss can (further) inflame the liver. My hope is that that inflamation will be temporary, and eventually my liver will makea healthy comeback with a stabalized healthy weight.
"Fatty liver" is somewhat of a newer epidemic that is accompanying the larger amounts of overweight people. So there's not a ton of research out there....
My elevated enzymes were found by chance during routine blood work. I'd be kind of curious to know if anyone on the board actually DID have some fat infiltration of the liver (pre-op) and just not know it?
Anyway, I hope no one minds my input here... this is just one of my biggest worries about my own path toward WLS :( It's scary stuff, as NAFLD and NASH have the potential to really damage the liver down the road.
I hope everyone's rebounds and become HAPPY livers
