NEW DIFFICULTY IN GASTRIC BYPASS

I have documented NIPHS (nesidioblastosis).  I was diagnosed at Mayo Clinic by Dr. Service, who's article you have quoted. They really don't know who will get this or how to prevent it.  I had 60% of my pancreas removed at Mayo last summer.  I am better but still have daily episodes of dropping blood sugar.  I will drop on a protein shake one day, and the next day I won't drop on M & Ms.  Not that I eat M & M's very often. I always ate correctly.  At 2 years I started having issues with low blood sugar.  My lowest was 36.  I still drop into the 50's and 60's on occassion.  I have played by the rules and this still happened.  Am I sorry I had RNY?  Yes, I am.  Besides the blood sugar issues, now I have iron deficiency anemia and have to have iron infusions every 6-8 wks.  I've always taken my supplements.  I also now have osteoporsis because of the malabsorbtion issues.   I would say that the majority of people who have RNY, won't have any of these issues.  But if you are one of the unlucky ones, you might have all the malabsobtion issues like me.  Would I do it over again?  Absolutely not.  I did my homework before surgery.  I thought I knew about all the complications that could occur.  At that time, no one knew about NIPHS.  I believe that it's going to be a huge issue as more of us get further out.  There seems to be a pretty significant number of people on this board who have low blood sugar issues, whether they've been diagnosed with NIPS or not. You will have to weigh the risk of complications with the benefits.  Yes, I am glad I've lost 100 pounds.  But at what cost?  Only the future will tell.

I'm sorry to hear about your struggle. Did you have proximal, distal or medial RNY? I read that there is less malabsorption with proximal and more with distal. I'm now wondering if many deficiencies and low blood sugar can be avoided with the proximal procedure.. hmmmm... Actually, I think I'll post this question on the main board, but what do you think about that?

I'm proximal so that blows that theory with me at least.
