Day Two of 5DPT
I made it through day one, barely.
I made the Pina Colada shake minus the pineapple extract because I didn't have it and my Giant didn't carry it. The first one of the day I made at home in the blender. The following two I made at work without one and it was all I could do to choke them down. I was nauseous after the second one.
For dinner I made the Low Carb Pumpkin Sausage soup and found it tastier than I expected.
This morning I made another shake at home and just had some soup for breakfast. I will have the soup for the rest of the day.
I know I'll be able to make it through the rest of the week after these two days.
A great side effect is that I'm down three pounds since yesterday. Woo Hoo!
For those that have done the 5 days in the past, how much weight did you lose? After the five days what were your eating habits?

Good for you !
I did not lose during the 5 days however, since then (over a month i think) I have lost almost 15 lbs.
My eating habits have totally changed. Smaller portions....better choices...no bad carbs...higher fiber foods...protein etc. I went back to being more concsious of ingrediants/nutrition facts & read labels now re. calories, carbs, fat & so on.
Not sure if this has anything to do with it or not but, I no longer drink as much coffee anymore.
I now limit it to 1 or 2 cups in the morning. I now drink honey & lemon green tea which has 0 cal & sugar free to flavor my water.
Check out the accountable threads also. You can get a good idea from the other girls on what they do as well.
Good luck !!!!!!

Diane,
If you go back a few days worth of posts, you will see there was a giant 5DPT marathon thingie! :)
There is so much info there for you to compare yourself with. It was really interesting to watch. ( I was a by stander) I did the test a month ago. It's not a test to lose weight but some/many do.
I was on my cycle and retaining water, but still managed to lose 2 lbs. I have been doing really great since. The test showed me my pouch DOES work. It is a TOOL...I was eating badly...I wasn't getting enough water. It got me back to basics without too much of a struggle and killed the carb cravings for me. Now I remember what it feels like to be in control and listen to my pouch. A month later, I'm still applying what I learned and what I need to do to maintain or lose more.
Good luck with the rest of your test. It really has surprising results...some have slightly different feelings, but I think the majority of people take something good away from the experience.

I have to say that being only two days in I do feel differently. I realized that I've been giving in to the carb monster and that has got to stop. My husband's family is Chinese so white rice is a staple of our diet. I had been eating less and less of it, but now I will be steering away from it totally.
I have always been one who craves salty, crunchy carbs for snacks and not so much sweets and chocolate as many do. So I have to get away from the snacking on pretzels and chips. I do like nuts so that would work as well as veggies.
It's only been a day, but I cannot tell a difference in my pouch just yet. I'm hoping by tomorrow I can.
I did the 5 day pouch test a while back and if I recall I lost 4 lbs total for the 5 days......I considered it an added benefit to regaining control.......that is my main reason for doing the test. Tomorrow I am starting it again in support of a friend (non-wls) that is getting married and wants to regain control......yeah for her!

I just finished the 5 day pouch test.. here was my experience
the good - it makes you follow the rules you should be already - no drinking 30 minutes before/after meals, gets you focused on protein and sticking to a meal length. It made me more concious of my meals sizes and got me focused on identifying when I was full.
the bad - you will lose weight on i****er weight* any time you cut out bread/starch carbs (and the majority of your other carbs) you will lose water *not fat*... I lost 6lbs on the 5dpt, within 3 days 4 of it came back, then another pound... I am down 1lb since doing it 2 weeks ago but I think thats due to my workouts and not the 5dpt. When I finished the 5dpt and went back to 'normal proper post-WLS eating'... I was strapped to the toilet... I ate a salad and about died from it - stomach cramping, gas, and running back and forth to the potty... it took about 3 days for my digestion to get back to normal. Also it did 'tighten' my pouch.. that part never really made sense to me anyways since the pouch is a muscle and naturally will stretch and relax.
Personally I will not do the 5dpt again. I did it because I see people always talking about it and I had a goal I wanted to hit by my birthday and figured what the heck. I did hit that weight goal for my birthday, but was quickly back up from it when I started to eat normally again.

Thanks for posting this Jennifer. I'm so far from my surgery that I'm going to be happy with any tightening that occurs.
I understand the weight loss from the water and carbs. I do hope to continue with weight loss as I plan to keep up with this type of eating. I do want to work veggies and fruit back into my diet but after reading about your salad I'm a wee bit scared. We'll see how it all plays out.
It's nice to get different perspectives on this little test.
Hi!
good for you doing the 5 day pouch test! Ok, I did this last week and I am a huge skeptic I must say and I really wasn't sure what to think.....
I am still in shock. I have broken my continuous carb craving cycle AND I cannot begin to tell you the difference it has made in my pouch! I was able to eat way too much at a time and now.....i feel like I did way back when I was much more of a newer post op......
My RNY was in 2002.
Good luck, you can do it!!!!!!!

Thanks so much Lorri! I am hoping I feel the same way by Saturday.
I need to break the carb cycle big time.
It's funny I've known that I need to break it for a long time now. Did I do it on my own? Nope, but for some reason I'm having no problems with this 5 day pouch test though. Funny how the motivation comes to us.
A pre-op friend of mine is the one who sent me a link to this site and the 5dpt. She excited to see how I do as well.
