Colonoscopy?

I am booked for a colonoscopy in May.  I am over 2 years post-op, at goal and very healthy since my WLS.  Here in Canada, the medical community is not as educated about WLS as in the USA.  I have asked the doctor who will be performing the scope if there could be any problems with the procedure due to the fact that I have had WLS (RNY).  He tells me that they do not go that high into the bowels/intestines during the procedure and there shouldn't be any concerns.  I'm not saying he doesn't know what he's doing, but then again, I don't know if he knows the difference between 'stomach staple' and 'bypass'. I just want to check with some of you grads from the USA to see if you have any adivce about this. Thanks so much.

Mary, I had a colonoscopy last year , my surgeon did it for me, that did my RNY. I was asleep the whole time, and as far as I know they don't go up that far to mess with your staple line. I will tell you the prep will be the worst of it, if you have to drink the prep, I had to drink a gallon of the stuff and let me tell you it taste awful. I tried to hide the taste but to no avail it still wasn't tasty but it is doable. Take care and don't fret over the test, God bless.

My RNY surgeon also did mine.  He wouldn't do anything that would mess up his work.  It'll be fine.

Mary Lou, I had a colonoscopy about 2 years after my RNY, and it was not a problem.  The worst of it is definitely the prep.  That drink is disgusting!  Hope all goes well for you. Becky

I must have been lucky, i had more then a few colonoscopys... plus endoscopys and they only gave me pills to take, i told him about the sx and that i couldnt hold that liquid crap in... so i had all pill prep....still way to much toilet time as with the other prep but i got away with no liquid.  they dont go very far up so as the others said it shouldnt have any effect on the sx spot.  good luck and remember..... they are very important to have done. we all hate them but the alternative is way worse if not caught in time.  let us know how it goes!!

Surgery Date: May 7,2004
