I had surgery almost 5 years ago and my doctor had me on clear liquid diet for one week, full liquid for 2 weeks and gradually worked into real food over the course of 8 weeks. My doctor also required I employ his nutritionist for the first year to be sure I was making the correct food choices and progressing to each new food stage properly. Maybe I should hire her again as I gained back 30 lbs over the past two years, went back to basics in January and have lost 5 of it.

I had no pre-op diet. Post-op I did full liquid for one week. At my one week post-op appointment my dr. asked me how I was doing with my soft foods. I've never been a good listener! I thought I had to do full liquids for a week! It was the best thing I've ever done. I'd never gone a full day on liquids, never mind a week. It flushed my body from food--it gave me a break from eating. I needed that.  After a week I started ricotta cheese, sauce, soups, scrambled egg w/cheese, tuna w/mayo and oatmeal. I'm so glad I didn't do that from day one--I waited 41-years for a break from putting food in my mouth. Then I was able to start over again like a newborn baby. I recommend one week on full liquid for everyone--it was very cleansing for me physically and emotionally and it gave me a great start.

I was on a hospital liquid diet for the first 7 days. That was protein shakes, juice, jello, etc.

I was on clear liquids at the hospital for a week.  Then full liquids at home for 2 (or was it 4?) weeks before transitioning to soft/pureed foods... I think that was two weeks of that and then finally went to solids...  Angie

Anita, I am always amazed at the different programs.  3 years ago there were many on liquid diets the first couple of weeks.  There were what I called stages that different doctors used. My post-op program was different than the majority also.....1 week of liquids only then for the next 6 months lean meats and green leafy vegetables only.....yea weird but it worked for me, I reached goal at 9 months out.  The quantity each program allows is different also. I have freaked out when I saw post-op just days out eating 1/2 cup, there is no why I could of eaten that much at one setting.....I sometimes can eat only that much now.  My surgeon does do an extra small pouch........1/2 oz was my max amount at one meal for 3 months, then 1 oz. Ok, let me go see what everyone else has to say, lol.

Thank you all for responding!  I really had no idea that there were so many different protocol from different doctors...At least it all makes sense now!  I wonder if different ways of starting make and huge difference in any of us?  I guess that is just too hard to measure... Thank you again you lovely people!  Anita

5 years out.  I was on liquid for about 3 weeks, then I moved on to mushy, watery "foods", then soft, then solid.  I guess about what would that be...like about 10 weeks of severe modification?  Anyway, I don't know what they are doing here with patients now.  We have no support group anymore and I haven't met any newbies lately.   It is interesting the different protocols each Dr. has.   Traci 303/131 Help help the Cadbury eggs are here!!!!  I need to be locked up until they go away the end of March.  LOL

I only ate like two table spoons of food for about 3 months...it gradually grew to a little more...Now I eat a good 7-8 ounces per meal (4-5 of it  protein) and veggies and a small side of protein rich grains or beans per meal...snacks I keep to 2-3 oz.  But if I'm having a bad day...I eat raw veggies to feed the cravings or pangs... But if I'm  not careful...those cadbury eggs and pink bunny cupcakes are just going to test every ounce of will power I have.  I just look at sugary stuff and feel the pain But...sometimes ....sometimes it goes down without a glitch and therein lies the trouble! WE cannot go there!  LOL
