Nothing pressing or anything... But I have been noticing that many new Post Ops are talking about being on all liquid diets... Is this something new or did you grads also do all liquids for the first few weeks or a month???? How long are they doing liquids? I wonder if they changed this and if it seems to work better somehow??? 4 years ago...I was on solid foods in the hospital...They brought us all applesauce and cottage cheese, jello and even a soft boiled egg on my the fourth day. I got to stay two extra days!( I don't think they believed me when I said I was allergic to latex...they found out it was TRUE!!!):::sarcastic look::: Anyway, I began eating solid foods immediately as per surgeon, hospital and nutritionist... I'm thinking that maybe this is why so many are a month out and have no idea what to eat and are asking people what foods they eat!  I'm totally confused.  I was noticing that docs are putting people on liquid diets to lose weight pre-op, but it didn't dawn on me til now that they continue this liquid diet post op...then have no clue what to do (some of them) It's kinda making me feel like an old grandpa/ma..."Well back in the day when I was a young post op....we ate our food from the start"  I thought I was going "looney toons" again (I do that from time to time) and I even pulled out my Nut book in the back of my closet and doctors directions and I sure enough...Food!  Immediately.  I even found my pre-op homework...where I had to fill out a week worth of post op meals (0-8 weeks) and return it to my nut and surgeon so I knew how to eat properly before he'd even do the surgery!  Okay, at least I can stop doubting that I screwed up from the start!  LOL Sometimes I feel like I am in a twilight zone... I never used to be so confused...I'm wondering if it's a vitamin definciency!  LOL ::::Wishing I could use that as an excuse::::   Anita

I too was on solid (well soft solid if that makes sense) right from the start.  I didn't know about liquid diets til I came on here and saw what others are advised to do.  Sometimes I wish I had done just liquids for a while as it may have sped up my loss as I was a slow loser (a non loser now grrrr). I guess each surgeon has his/her own ideas on how to follow up their surgery...

I'm with you.  Back in the day (11/17/2003) I to was eating solid food almost from the start. I remember eating Wendy's chile, and refired beans with cheese from Taco Bell within a few weeks. Infact someone in my suport group stoped there on their way home form the hospital and lived on that for a week or so all with the ok of his doc. I was told I could eat anything even meat as long as it was moist and not fried. So my crock pot became my best friend.   Robin

Different doctors, different protocols. My hubby had surgery and was fed pureed foods in the hospital.  He stayed on pureeds for about 8-10 weeks. Me, I had surgery and was on liquids for a week then pureed for another 7-9 weeks. Kathy

Good Morning!!!! I was not on a liquid diet before surgery, but was on liquids (phase 1) for about 4wks after surgery~I was told this let things heal before introducing anything more dense. The I progressed to phase 2-pureed/soft foods for several weeks. Then on to phase 3 which introduced more foods and things didn't have to be pureed. Then phase 4-the rest of my life, normal foods, etc. Its weird to think back to that and how exciting it was to move on to a new phase~everything tasted SO good!!!!!!!!

Liquids the first couple of days, then soft solids for the next couple of weeks (??? not sure how long, it's been a while).   I think sometimes they do the liquid thing to maximize weightloss early on. For me it was a non-issue; I could only eat a bite or two at a time in the beginning anyway.

i think every doc has their own way to handle post ops. i was on liquids for a week, then puree then soft then food. which was a good thing for me, cause im 19 months out and to this day cant eat some foods, like red meat for example.  just wont go down. hugs, jacki

I was on liquids the day before and three weeks after surgery.  Then I could start adding foods like yogurt.  It took a couple of weeks before I cold have meat (of any kind.)  i think my first meal was yogurt.

Every doc seems to be different on this.  I was given oatmeal, jello, and pudding in the hospital two days after surgery.  When I left the hospital on day four my surgeon said he wanted me to eat the Progresso Chicken Noodle and Vegetable beef soups.  He said to strain off the broth and eat the chunks of Noodles and Chicken and Beef.  They even had me taking pills before I left the hospital. When I saw him one week after leaving the hospital (11 days post-op) he told me to go ahead and move to real food.  I mentioned some fried fish from Long John Silvers and he said that would be fine.  Had that after leaving his office and ate some BBQ pulled pork that night.  Never had any problems. During the seminar/consult my surgeon had made the comment that he does not believe in pureed foods.  Said nothing tastes good pureed and that he sees no reason for it.  Just chew, chew, chew, chew, and chew some more. I have friends who have used other surgeons in the same program though but used different docs who were told to do liquids, then pureed, then soft solids, and finally solids.
