late diarrhea

Twice recently my DH and I have eaten something (bad tuna salad one line--other time who knows) that gave us diarrhea.  His came soon after he ate it, mine was like six hours later.  I am three years out from rny.  Anyone else have this happen.  I can remember before wls, food went throwh my stomach pretty quick; and if I was going to be sick, it happened pretty soon after eating it.   Patricia

Could be that where you are...it is warm and food spoils so much faster in the heat.  Bacteria starts growing on food as soon as it hit the air and can double in bacterial growth every 20 minutes, but can stay safely edible for about 2 hours at room temp (I hate buffets because of this problem)   Foods that are low acid like meat, fish, grains, beans are most at risk.  Cross contamination of these food juices with other foods can also cause this and the symtoms...diarreah!  The biggest problem is that spoiled food can look and smell just fine!  I never leave anything out (except raw veggies and fruits of course)  But sometimes I am sooo hungry and I'll  make myself some tuna..and just clean up after I eat...I stopped doing that and just take a minute to at least cover it ...then get it in the fridge as soon as possible. I absolutely NEVER know what to expect after I eat.  No two days are the same, even when I eat the same thing...I never had any trouble in that department...Now...I have all my mostly useless remedies under the sink just in case. (Nothing seems to work fast and efficiently)  BM's are a total mystery to me for 4 years since surgery.

Thanks for the reply.  I was just wondering if other people have slow reaction to an upset stomach.  Before wls surgery if I ate something that did not agree with me, it went right through me.  Seems now it takes longer.  Like you say this is a BM mystery.  ha-ha

Yes!  I do have a slow reaction sometimes!  It's totally strange!  Sometimes I might eat something with sugar or high fat and I am fine for a few hours...then like lightening...I'm just minding my own business and I feel that slight rumble and ....well the rest is history...So yes!  I wonder if it is the bacterias, mixing with the intestine's own flora and before you know it there is a fight going on! LOL  I have no idea what that is all about...But I wi**** didn't involve me!  hehehe...but it's only happened a few times and that's why I think it might just be bad food with a slow reaction.  Sometimes sugar dumping symtoms happen an hour or two after I eat without coming up or out one end or the other. Just when I think I'm safe...bamm hits me like a big ewet noodle ..shocking!  LOL Anita

yeah, about the time we think we have our bodies and our wls figured out, here come another surprise.  Let's face it, we will never be 'normal' again.   NORMAL what ever that is.  After three years I am so thankful.  Recently I was sitting at a party and people were just shoving food down.  I was so thankful that I can not and do not want to eat like that. Have a good day.   Patricia

I've had this happen a number of times pre-WLS.  I suspect bacteria from the food.  Luckily, haven't really had any diarrhea since surgery. Kathy
