Protein Absorption - grams per......

Ok, I'm looking for research that will confirm/deny the amount of protein we can absorb in one sitting.....I've heard a million times and I think (old age here, lol) I remember reading up on it but for the life of me I cannot find anything right now. There's some discussion going on between a couple of RNY patients that are saying 30 grams is the max; others saying they disagree because "athletes/weight lifters" consume way more than that on a daily basis.....and yes I know our systems or different but I need some backup to support my understanding.....in the mean time......here I came Google, lol. Thanks!

I was told by the dietician and my surgeon 30 grams per meal. So if your doing protein shakes with more than 30 grams per serving its a waste of money. Mine has 25 grams per scoop. Hope this helps, Debra

Debra, I was told the same thing....what I need s is a study or something to prove my point, not that I want to get in a debate with my friend but he won't accept my answer, lol, without proof.

Yep that is what I have been told as well.  We can only absorb 30g max at a time.

Well... I've always understood a person with a regular digestive system can only absorb about 30 grams of protein at a time... which makes me think WE absorb less than that... but I really don't know... I'm just guessing :-) Angie

Angie, that's been my understanding also....he did find a study (20 years old) that says the normie can absorb 100 grams at a time......I need to find concrete info.....guess I'll go to Google land tonight, lol.  I just want to be sure that what we understand is correct, I'd hate for someone to waste "gold" i.e. protein powder....I do normally make sure my shakes are around 30 grams.

Have you asked on the nutrition messageboard? They have a few dieticians who will answer these types of questions. Sher

The 30 grams per "sitting" or meal or dose (whatever you want to call it) is a MYTH.  There was a post about it on the Diet and Nutrition forum a while back and the RDs there said that they could find NO evidence or study to back that claim up.

Sorry Dana, but I no longer have the link on my computer, although I printed it off about a year or so ago.   This is an issue that has really put a bee in my bonnet, so to speak.  I hate when someone gives a figure, as in 30 grams of protein, without the studies to back it up.  As far as I could find, and this was with help from a medical librarian here on OH, there have not been any studies on WLS patients concerning protein absorption.  Therefore, the 30 gram figure, is a myth.  There really aren't any good studies on anyone.  What I did read was that all proteins are not absorbed equally.  The source makes a HUGE difference in what is absorbed in a normal intestine.  Whey isolates are absorbed more easily than egg proteins which are more easily absorbed than beef proteins, such as steak.  So, to summarize, it is a complicated issue, that I don't think most nutritionists can back up their recommendations with facts.  I consume about 40 grams of protein at a time with my protein drink.  If I absorb it all, fine.  If I don't, fine.  I enjoy drinking it just the same. If you come up with better info, please post it for us. Debra M.
