Accountability... what did you eat Tuesday
lol... than the beans were a good thing.. well you wouldnt want to do what i do to stay regular. You know i have a picky pouch. believe it or not I eat sf ice cream. it keeps me regular.. thats right.. my tummy doesnt like sugar free either.. could you imagine what would happen if I ate regular sugar...lol.. only time I miss a day is when I dont eat my ice cream..lol
Your carbs are fine a little high for what you are working for but in truth barely high.. good job on the day. get that protein up a bit too.. that will help.
See you tomorrow
Carla

S - 1/2 c. trail mix (Trader Joe's reduced salt mixed nuts w/ dried cranberries & Ghirardelli Milk Chocolate chips, Grande Breve Caffe Mocha from Starbuck's

Sure, I could've made better choices - no oreos, not as much Starbuck's. And pizza. But since I wasn't responsible for dinner last night, I accepted what was put before me and didn't ***** about it. It was nice to not cook for a change - had to visit my mom in the hospital where she's recuperating from her second hip replacement. What a trouper!!

Bronwen, BTW my oldest niece has your name and I absolutely love it.
I knew as a DS the food intake is different but didn't realize how much so. There weren't any doctors in Houston when I was looking to have my surgery that did the DS and actually never even looked into it.......I've tried to do some research on the procedure but still I'm a big dummy on the DS.
How large is the pouch for lack of a better word for DS patients? I am still very restricted on quantity, dense protein I can only eat 2-4 oz in a meal and little else. Example: Lunch I had 3 oz of tuna w/ 1 tbsp light mayo and 3 Triscuit crackers and could only eat 1 1/2 of the crackers and about 2 oz of the tuna.
Just curious......I am anxious to know more about this procedure. My hubby had the lapband some regain and is trying to gain control again.....I think the DS would be a great procedure for him since he is a volume and fat food kinda person.

Thanks! My name was the bane of my existence until my teens when it became "cool" to be different...
I think Dr. Stewart is the only TX doc doing the DS. My stomach (we don't call it a pouch, because it really is just a smaller stomach: same entrance & exit as normal, and is banana shaped) started out at about 3-4 oz. and has stretched (that's normal, by the way) to about 7-9 oz. I have significantly more restriction than I ever did as a pre-op! Plus, I feel full now, where I never EVER did before. I can eat a small-normal meal now (small for a normal person). I always giggle, though, when DSers are referred to as "volume" eaters - there's not a whole lot of volume going into an 8 oz stomach!
You're right to notice that I do tend to eat a lot of fatty foods, although yesterday was a bit over-the-top for me (I don't normally do bacon & eggs for dinner). If your hubby ever did well on the Atkins diet (but fell down because he couldn't do without ever having a baked potato or a slice of bread again - like me) then he'd do well with the DS. Mine is a veggie-lovin, granola-crunchin', whole grain health nut - not a meat & dairy lover, like me. We're like Jack Sprat & his wife...
I'm happy to answer any questions you've got!

I agree... that is very interesting. I dont know much about DS either. I am not sure what my absorption rate is with rny but I know it's less. they can actually break it down for you like that.. would be awesome to know what you are really getting from your food intake.
Hope your mom is feeling better.. hip surgery is no fun as I am sure she and you know. Take care and take care of yourself during this stressful time.
Carla
Thanks for your well wishes for my mom - this is her second hip replacement, so she's fully bionic now
She's really doing amazingly well with the second hip.
DSers, I think, have to be more aware of the malabsorption, because we can eat more and have to eat differently. We malabsorb 80% of our fat & 40% of our protein. Because of that, our protein requirement is higher (100-120 g daily) and if we eat low fat, we get constipated... lovely...
My surgeon (the man, the myth, the legend) published a study several years ago on fat malabsorption in DS, RNY, & "normal" people and found the number for DSers above, that RNYers don't absorb 40% of the fat they eat (I'm assuming proximal RNY here) and that normal people don't absorb 5% of the fat they eat. Kind of fascinating, really...

It's not on a website that's accessible to the general public, I don't think. One of the DSers on Duodenalswitch.com posted the abstract (she has access as it relates to her profession). Here's a link to it at duodenalswitch.com.
It makes for interesting reading. I wish they had the information on the other nutrients that we all malabsorb.
What a day for you, work wise. That has to be a difficult situation to be in. Food wise it is good to see you are eating well and maintaining.
My day, a little to high on the carbs maybe. Have you read the article that was on the opening page of OH the other day about carbs? It was "food" for thought. Interesting.
