Hiatal hernia, ulcer/fistula, reflux & esophogitis

Hello everyone,  A few months ago I had posted about a really bad pain I kept feeling when eating. Pretty much anything I would eat was hurting so badly that it would make me cry and I couldn't move, all I could do was just lay there curled up in a ball until the pain passed. It got to the point where even drinking liquids was hurting, although not that bad but still. I haven't been having the pain as much lately because I have been eating very easy foods like yogurt and not eating very much at once. I went to my WLS doc and he had me get an upper GI. I just got the results of that. It turns out that I have a hiatal hernia, which is where the stomach has herniated above the diaphragm, and pretty bad esophogitis with reflux. Also, I have either an ulcer or a fistula formation at the opening of my pouch. I am scheduled for an Endoscopy on Thursday, but I am just wondering if anyone else has experienced any of these things, and if so, did you have to be re-operated on? I am scared to be re-operated on because my husband is in the military (he is deployed to Korea right now) and as soon as he is done in Korea, we are moving to Japan but in order for me to go with him I have to be medically cleared and I doubt they would let me go so soon after an operation. I am planning on asking my surgeon on Thursday but I can't stop worrying about it and I am just wondering if anyone has dealt with these issues. Any advice on any of this?

hi tiffany, Well I don't know if I can ease your concern or not, but i did have an ulcer.  Mine was cleared up medically with carafate and prilosec for 2 weeks.  It was found during an endoscopy i had because i was having pain when and after i ate.  My surgeon told me going into it that if it was an ulcer probably no surgery unless it is pretty bad and meds won't heal it.  And surgery is the only fix for a fistula. (sorry)  So that is what i was told.  Luckily my ulcer healed with meds.  ( i am still on prilosec once a day now for 6 months, when i stop taking my ulcer comes back in a couple weeks.  related to reflux)  I don't think you can get a straight answer until the endoscopy finds out what is going on.   best of luck jessica
