Someone made the comment to me that I was a DSer in RNY clothing...let me explain my situation.
I had a gallbladder surgery go wrong a couple years before my RNY. My sigmoid colon had to be removed...about 40cm, we'll call that distal. Then I had my RNY, which 150 cm were bypassed - which is also distal and then at 6 months post op from my RNY, I had twisted intestines. I had to have another 100cm - proximal, removed because some of the intestine had died. So that's 290 cm of intestines - distal and proximal that have been removed.
I've lost 100% of my weight.
The comment that I got, that I'm not the normal for RNY and that's why I have been so succesful and they could see me in 4 yrs, still being at or below goal. Don't get me wrong...Of course that's where I want to be but I didn't like the attitude that came along with the comment. They said that I had more of a DS type surgery than an actual RNY.
I dump on sugar and fat...I eat little portions...hmmmm, if it walks like a duck and talks like a duck...but am I a special breed of duck?
I go to see my surgeon on FEB 8th and will talk to him about this...but I wanted to know what you guys thought.

You're right....weight loss is weight loss, no matter how I got there. But the comment just made stop and think... hmmmm
I'm very supportive to my weight loss sisters & brothers. I'll be the first one by your side if you're having a tough day or need a pat on the back. But do I need to put a disclaimer out there that I'm not the typical RNY patient and results could vary...LOL

Hi Dawn,
I don't know anything about the other types of surgeries as it was not offered with tricare when I did mine four years ago....but that is NOT RNY clothing or DSer clothing either! That's more like S&M...hehe ( I could not resist ) Woo hoo you naughty vixen...
I was army...Hubby retired Army...Got kiddles the same age too...Now if only I had your legs and those boots...Vinyl makes me chaff though and I'm allergic to latex..

Anita...
thanks for the kind words!!! Yes, hubby has gone a little nuts with the naughty outfits and the hooker boots. I sure have to say, he makes me feel so sexy and wanted!!! He always has..even when I was weighing in at 300lbs...I still was his 300lb HONEY!!! Now, that I've lost all my weight, I'm more comfortable wearing those outfits.
Go MILITARY!!! No matter what the branch (even if it's Army - LOL)...I support them all!!!
pug hugs,
Dawn
You're so welcome...You look amazing. I cannot believe what you've been thru...what a mess! Hopefully you got the best of both worlds (RNY and DS). It sounds like you do...Hope it stays that way. Little Miss Double Trouble!
I'm right near Quantico so I am partial to the Marines too. Right now I admire anyone who has the balls to join any of our services after 9-11...Like my baby boy! He's my hero. ::::bragging::::
Yep...those Military men have some odd behavior...but they are so worth keeping. I kept mine for 23 years myself! (Or he kept me...cause basically we are military wo-men ourselves, huh?)Thru thick and thin...whoooowaaah!
Anita
It sounds to me like your combination of surgeries have put you in a situation very similar to Vitalady's. I'm sure she'd be happy to share her experiences with you. Write her at [email protected].

I guess labels aren't as important as making sure you get the proper nutrition and supplements for how your body handles food and vitamins.
But, if you want we can label ya DS as in "Designer Surgery".

You know, I think many of us have reasons for not being 'typical'. My surgeon actually rushes me out of the waiting room and hasn't put my picture in his 'afters' book because he thinks I'm an unrealistic expectation! I was a 'light-weight' at 110lbs overweight, but lost all of the weight in 6 months because I actually followed his directions to the letter - especially exercising every day. He actually told me that he's never known anyone to actually do that from day 1 before (though I've definitely seen it here). He admitted he put in the "You must exercise for at least a 1/2 hour a day" rule hoping that his patients would succeed in that 50% of the time! Also, my thyroid went a little wonky (I became hyperthyroid for a while after being hypothyroid for many years - HYPO again now though!)
So, I too am not "typical"... It puts you in a weird place because it's hard to find a place to 'fit in'. But in the big picture, you and I are both RNYers because that's the surgery we chose and the one we had! Hitting goal and maintaining it does not make you a DSer. It makes you a successful RNYer!
I would say you're a very distal RNYer. If your WLS was performed as a RNY, then it functions that way, and all the other intestine removal, would only (I'm assuming) add to your malabsorption and make you more distal in your RNY. So not DS at all.
And I agree, you look great.
