5 Day Pouch Test Question

Good Morning: I've tried the 5 day test in the past and just FAILED to complete it.  I'm a "grazer" and have gained 50 lbs and am really upset with myself.  I know that my pouch is fine, but I need to get my "head together" to do what I need to do.  I need to lose 70 lbs, but would just love to lose "any lbs" at this point in time. My question is: 1.     Liquid protein, crystal light, broth for days 1 and 2. When we can do the tuna, chicken an eggs, how many ounces is involved?  Can I mix a "very little" taste of lowfat mayo with the tuna and chicken?  Can I mix skim milk to make the scrambled eggs?  Can I have a slice of lowfat cheese with the scrambled eggs. I want to do this the correct way and would appreciate someone leading me in the right direction. Thanks, Kathy P.

Kathy, I'm answering by memory only.....so I may not give you the exact.....Day 1 and 2 is liquid protein, broth, crystal ligh****er, soups, s/f jello, s/f popcicles. Day 3 is soft protein.......which I consider tuna/chicken salad to be, and yes she says if you want to add a little mayo that's ok, but limit the amount.   I think the thing to remember is protein and the purpose is to reset your pouch and decarb yourself.  I don't think a little milk or low fat cheese will cause any damage in staying on the plan.

Dana:

Thanks for your response.  However, I need to know the "total ounces" we're allowed when on the 3 to 5 days of the program.

I look forward to hearing from you.

I actually made a summary that I printed for myself.  Here you go

THE FIVE DAY POUCH TEST

Day 1 and 2:  Liquid Protein
Low-carb protein shakes, broth, clear or cream soups, sugar-free gelatin and pudding

You can have as many low-carb protein shakes as you like to satisfy hunger or cravings. The purpose of all liquids is to break any snacking, grazing or processed carbohydrate habits. In addition the liquids will work to cleanse your system and prepare you for the following three days.

Try to reduce your caffeine intake as well, but do not stop caffeine cold turkey or you will feel sick and frustrated potentially losing the desire to continue with the pouch test.

RULES:  It is very important to drink a minimum of 64 ounces of water each day. This will prevent dehydration, will help curb cravings and will flush your body of toxins and fat. Sufficien****er intake improves kidney function and cell processes.

Day 3:  Soft Protein

Canned tuna or salmon
Eggs cooked as desired.
Fresh soft fish (tilapia, sole, orange roughy) - baked or grilled, and lightly seasoned.

RULES:  You get to eat as much as you want as often as you want.  You only get 15 minutes each time you sit down to eat. No drinking 30 minutes before or after meals and no drinking with your food. A dry pouch will hold your soft protein longer helping your to feel full and fed longer.

Day 4:  Firm Protein

Ground meat (beef, turkey, lamb) cooked dry and lightly seasoned, shellfish, scallops, lobster steamed and seasoned only with lemon, salmon or halibut steaks, grilled and lightly seasoned.

RULES:  You get to eat as much as you want as often as you want.  You only get 15 minutes each time you sit down to eat. No drinking 30 minutes before or after meals and no drinking with your food. A dry pouch will hold your soft protein longer helping your to feel full and fed longer. Remember to drink plenty of water between meals.

Day 5:  Solid Protein

White meat poultry or pork cooked dry and lightly seasoned, beef steak grilled or broiled.

RULES:  Remember to chew chew chew. Measure your portion (4-6 ounces) and eat only until you feel your pouch tighten. Remember, only 15 minutes per meal, so you'll have to work fast to chew your food completely.  No drinking 30 minutes before or after meals and no drinking with your food. Don't go hungry! Remember, you can eat as often as you want as long as it is solid protein, consumed without liquids and measured in 4-6 ounce portions.

HI Kathy, I'm having my usual breakfast (a protein shake) but was thinking of waiting until next week to start... I'm not sure.  I teach and I have a class this afternoon where I know there will be crepes (that I made last night, LOL!) and I'm afraid I will eat one... Plus I have to be gone until almost 9:00pm today... Can I realistically make enough extra protein shakes to carry around with me until that time??  I just don't know... Ugh... I want to do this but I'm afraid I will cheat this week because of my schedule and all that's going on right now (lots of away from home time, some restaurant meals...)  How can I deal with this? Kim

Kim:

I have a suggestion for taking several protein drinks.

I make mine and mix it in the blender with about 12 ice cubes.  I then put them into the various traveling mugs.  I take ice cubes to work to make my crystal light so that it stays cold.  You could get an insulated bag and just put all of your mugs into that for your traveling purposes when necessary.

Don't forget we can have the water and the crystal light and broth the 1st two days.  I would take a travel mug with ice cubes in it and bring along my water bottle and my individual crystal light mixes.  When wanting the crystal light I would just put the water and the mix into the travel mug and shake it up and it would be ready to drink.

I'm going to do it today and keep up the 5 days.  I really need to lose 65 lbs, but I'm doing short range planning for losing 20 lbs right now.

We'll keep in touch.  Good luck to you.
