To what do you attribute your regain?  (Sorry if I seem nosey. I'm trying to make sure that my decision is best for my desired lifestyle.)

I had open RNY 11/17/2003 so I'm over 4 years out here's my take.  I got down to a "normal" weight and BMI.  BUT even though I'm shot I'm large boned and BOTH my PCP and WLS doc told me to GAIN a few pounds. WELL for me that was a bad thing. I gained a little to much.  I went from 114 back up to 118-123.  Where they wanted me to be.  I stayed there for 2 years then I got VERY LAZY and stopped watching what I ate, I stopped working out and I stopped going to SUPPORT GROUP MEETINGS.  and got up to 145!!!!!!!  I'm now trying hard to eat better but old habits are VERY HARD to break. I'm holding at 137. I really HATE HATE HATE to work out so I know if I do more weight will come off.   SO my advice. stick to the rules, watch the carbs, sugar etc, and keep working out and you'll not regain. If you get lazy you will regain.  Good Luck,  Robin

In February it will be 5 years since my surgery I lost a total of 105 lbs and I have gained 14 pounds.  The pounds have crept up on me because I went back to bad habits of  snacking at night and eating carbs.  I can go all day without eating,,,I know this is not good for me.... but at night I go crazy. I am now into my second day of the five-day pouch diet and I am feeling lousy about what I have done to my body.

OMG, I could sooooo plagiarize Jo's post!  I'm 3 1/2 yrs. post-op, lost 110 lbs, gained about 10 and then maintained for about a year.  Then I got complacent, stoooopid, and lazy about my portions and my food choices (unfortunately, I can eat ANYTHING without dumping), and gained back 30 lbs.

Not a failure on the part of wls -- 100% a failure on my  part! I am committed to losing the weight I gained by my 4 year surgiversary on June 29th.  It's NEVER too late to get back on the right track and work WITH our pouch, instead of against it! Angie

I am in the same boat as you, Angie (and Jo)! It really comes down to personal accountability. WLS isn't the culprit.  I too can (and usually do) eat just about anything I want without dumping. I attribute my re-gain to just being complacent, stupid and lazy.  WLS can't change everything about us.  I still love food and hate exercise.  It's a daily struggle for me.  I had a little bit of success with the 5-day pouch test a couple of weeks ago but there is still a lot of craziness in my life that has sent me spiraling straight back into my bad habits again. I'm weak. I figure I'd have to do the 5dpt every single week just to stay honest. But there's got to be a better way.  So incredibly discouraging. I need to stop coming on here when I'm feeling stressed-out and PMS-y. It's a BAD combination.

Hmmmm... are you... me!!!??? Love food, hate exercise...  whew... doesn't that sound familiar! Here's a good talking-to I gave myself a while back... and that I keep having to give myself over and over again... I believe it is FINALLY sinking in! "Angie: It is simple. Decide whether you want to fail or succeed. Because either one, failure or success, is entirely up to you. So, remember why you were so brave as to have this surgery. Remember how good it feels to be 100+ pounds lighter. Visualize how it will feel to wear those Levi's you've been wanting for so long to fit into... Decide whether you want to fail or succeed. Once you've decided - Work towards the goal. If you decided to fail, that's easy to do. If you decided to succeed, it takes commitment and persistence. The surgery took care of the tummy. WE get to work on our brain. If you don't make a conscious decision right now, trust me, it doesn't get easier as time goes by. Success is there for the taking. You have to want it bad enough to put forth the effort and work for it."

In February, I'll be 4 years out. I haven't gained back anything.  I've lost 167 pounds. and my BMI is 18.  My taste for food changed with surgery. I spend  a lot of time cooking, but not eating. I think I prepare much healthier food for my family and we are certainly more active, now. I changed my lifestyle and my eating habits and I am much happier. I really think this surgery affects everyone, differently. I just do what works best for me.

I lost 142 +/- and then gained +/-25# back. The key to GAINING weight back: No protein Drink while you eat Don't drink water, but drink diet sodas ALL DAY (keep in mind this is what I've done to GAIN again) No vitamins NO EXERCISE Not keeping track of cal/fat/proteins SOOOOOOOO As I'm telling everyone, the day after my birthday I'm doing the 5DPT and see if that can kickstart my WL again! Wish me luck as I wish you luck!
