Hypoglycemia - help

Whole grains give me a hypoglycemic attack and sometimes fake sugars.  I have read that can happen--I thought it was bizarre, but wow, the results are horrible. I have started to pay more attention to how I feel when I eat and know that I really have to watch everything I put in my mouth. I'm actually grateful this happens even with  whole grains, because it keeps me in check with my eating.   I am so afraid of gaining weight back.   As for your hunch of too much insulin, I think you need to go for an insulin blood test, not just blood sugar.  You could still have insulin resistence and might need medication.

Thanks Angela.. well yeah.. not only do I dump I also drop on carbs.. so its very important for me to stay on plan or I reek the unwanted "benefits" of not being compliant.. But I am ok with this.. I just need to up my cals to fuel my workouts some.. otherwise I will end up skin and bones.. my protein is sky high and my fats are where they should be so that leaves carbs to up.. its tough.  Thanks for the suggestions, I may seek the advice of an endocrinologist if it doesn't get better soon.
Hugs, Melissa

There have actually been quite a few postings on this issue over the years. Here's a link to one of them that talks about Nesidioblastosis. I believe the treatment is to have part of your pancreas removed. Since you're a nurse you may be more familiar with the condition. http://www.obesityhelp.com/forums/IA/a,messageboard/action,r eplies/board_id,4814/cat_id,4414/topic_id,3226730/ I started having issues at around 14-16 months out and it has gotten gradually worse. Right now I just try to be very careful what I eat but there are times I can't figure out what triggers it.  Also, since you're only a little over a year out you will probably bounce back after going below goal weight. Give it a litle time. Good luck! Beth

Melissa, You may not be able to control it because it could be nesidioblastosis.  Mayo has been doing research on it.  I got to the point where I would drop on only protein.  But not all the time.  The beta cells make insulin inappropriately.   I've been reading a book about insulin resistance.  It talks about balancing the carbs with protein.  I assume that when you eat carbs, you also eat protein.  I'm not sure that this way of eating will really help me manage my blood sugars.  I tried it yesterday and was hungry all day.  Since I'm not at goal, in fact, I've gained 15 pounds, I'm going back to almost all protein until I can get my wt under control.  Then I'll start adding back in carbs. You might want to see about going up to Rochester and seeing Dr. Adrian Vella.  He's an edno who is taking care of us RNYers that are having hypoglycemic issues.  I saw Dr. F. John Service who did the original research, but I don't think he's seeing patients now.  Email me and I'll send you an article by Dr. Service. Lyn [email protected]

Thanks Lynn... Mayo isn't far from me at all and I have already considered going there.  I do notice if I do not weight train and I lower the carbs under 100 better 80 or lower... I do fine.  SO not sure I have nesidioblastosis.. but could be heading there?  I have read about this before.. rather interesting.  Thanks for the information.  I really appreciate it.. soo sooo much!

Hey Lyn ... how are you doing?  Haven't talked in a while.  I'm still having hypoglycemic issues (I won't even go back to my endo -- he just looks at me with a blank stare and shrugs his shoulders) ... just had one on New Year's day ... but at least I haven't had a seizure lately.   I do remember when I researched this, I did come across someone who quoted an article from St. Vincent's which stated this "may" be a phase many RNY post-ops can go through ... but *****ally knows?   Take care ... look forward to talking with you soon!

Hi Karyn, I was just thinking about you yesterday and wondered how you're doing!  It's a good thing that you haven't hit the floor lately.  That's kinda hard on the ol' body! If it's a phase, I sure as heck hope I grow (bad choice of words) out of it soon!  Last week I dropped to the mid 60's on a protein shake that had like 3 carbs.  Grrrr!  Some days are good and some are not. Stay in touch! Lyn

I have noticed it happens to me when I am exhausted. Like when I don't get enough sleep and when I run around doing stuff all day. I have unintentionally re-gained 30 lbs and it hasn't been happening hardly anymore regardless of amt of carbs I eat. Maybe my body size it back up to the size my pancreas thinks it should be based on the excess insulin it produces.
