Vitamins make me hungry I have finally figured out .  I am 4 years out RNY surgery and have found that they make me hungry .  IF I dont take them I can go all day without food and survive on way less.  Do we still malabsorb this far out , I have heard so many stories I just dont know and I no longer see my surgeon who didnt know the answer anyway , ALTHOUGH an excellent surgeon .. So longtimers ....I need some help and or advise please .. Should I try changing and to what and since I eat a well balanced diet is it ok maybe to take the calcium and B-12 Sub only ..  I realize it is only your opinion but a persons experience speaks volumes I think. Thanks so much  Shirl

I am only 3yrs post op, but from what I've researched and learned from my surgeon we will malabsorb vitamins/minerals forever so we will need to supplement forever. I'm sure you will get some great answers from the many knowledgable people around here that can completely explain the how's and why's. There was also this post several down from yours about someone that stopped taking their vits~just one of many I've read over the years. The part of the intestine that absorbs vitamins from food is bypassed therefore we must take vitamins for life.   Our absorption of fats will increase as the intestines adapt (hypertrophy - grow in length and grow more little finger-like projects that absorb (villia)). What type of vitamins are you taking?  Chewable?  Tablets?  Capsules?  Maybe you want to change the form of them to see if it is the specific one that is giving you an issue. You do not want to give up the multivitamins.  There are too many serious issues that can come from deficiencies in what they provide to us. Your body needs fuel so going all day without food isn't a good thing.  Bodies tend to operate best with eating every 4 hours or so. Good luck, Kathy

Yes, we malabsorb forever (13 yrs for me).

Without the vites, pick off which organs you do and do not want and I'll list the vites you have to take or can skip, ok?

I've never heard of vites making ppl hungry, more the opposite, UNLESS you're taking something with sugar.

I'd say I get less hungry when I'm taking vitamins ESP. when I'm taking iron.  Perhaps your not taking enough vitamins and your body is trying to compensate?  OR you have a stretched out stoma....there is one guy on the Men's forum (i think it's mike@goal).  He said if he didn't eat anything except for protein shakes during the day, he woudln't be hungry, but the minute he put something solid in his mouth, he got hungry...it turned out he had a stretched out stoma.  As for what I take, I'm a DSer.....and I take the following: 2 multis 1 Dry A 2 Dry Ds 4-6 calcium citrates a day Repliva (prescription iron) 6 vit. Cs (i weight lift, and vit. C helps you recover) 2 B complex 1  B-12 1 zinc Scott
