I know alot of us are doing the 5dpt at this time, along with myself. I saw my nut this morning and he said he doesnt like the idea of the 2 days of liquids but does argee with days 3 - 5. When I first had my surgery I was given a booklet of information, they call it the "WLS Bible". In there is a page with the 5 guildlines for success. 1. Protein first at every meal 2. NEVER snack between meals 3. Drink at least 64 ounces of water each day 4. Exercise 20-30 minuets a day 5. Take your vitamins and minerals as directed I have strayed away from these rules and I think they are very important to keep in mind. My visit with him today was just the kick in the butt I needed. I have gained 15 pounds back from my lowest and hope to get it back off before my next appointment in March which is my 2 year anniversary. Hope this helps someone, Debra

I agree with you (and your nut).  I'm not a fan of the 5 day pouch test.  From what I can see, it drives everyone crazy!  It seems like a crash diet to me!?  Back to the basics are ALWAYS relevant!

I too have to agree with your NUT.   IMHO, the 5 day pouch test is the same as doing the fad diets that I did prior to WLS.  We do have this tool and if we just do the basic's one should be successful.  I honestly don't want to go back to the lifestyle that I had prior to my surgery.  There was a time that I did gain some weight and all I did was focus and basically follow the first three guidelines and did fine.  This should be an everyday focus for all of us.  Again, this is just my opinion.  Good luck with your next appt I know you will do fine... I too agree with your nut, mariposah and dirtbikecheermom's  comments.  the pouch test diet might work, but its a clearly a crash diet.  we've all been on crash diets pre-op and know what they do, quick weight loss and usually regain after it.  Follow your WLS bible, protein first will make you full, lots of water and vitamins are beneficial for weight loss as well as exercise.  you can do it! :)

I feel a little differently then many of you! I feel the pouch test is a way of gaining control. It's not a fad diet because you are having protein and fluids you are just doing it in liquid form. It really is no different then going back to basics, that's how many of us ate when we first got home from surgery. I feel the pouch test made me crazy because i was so addicted to carbs that it was like a detox program for me.  Everyone has to do what they have to do to propel themselves forward. Have a healthy and happy New Year no matter what you do. ANDI

It doesn't feel "faddish" at all, to me.  And it is only 5 days, not a recommended way of losing weight. When I was newly post op, I spent those early days just trying to get all of my fluid and protein in. Once I progressed a little further, I was allowed to move onto soft proteins, still working on my fluids. And then, finally to firm protein, and on and on.  After day 2 of the 5dpt, I was eating, pretty much, as I should be eating all of the time. I'm on day 5, and I feel as though I have some sense of control back, my eating is back on a schedule, and I will continue my "back to basics" way of eating from here on. I'm sure I'll have an indulgence here and there, because food is part of my life and I do get enjoyment from it and the sociability factor that is sometimes part of eating, but I hope to not get off track by eating poorly for days and days, as I had.   I think "back to basics", which is where the pouch test has brought me back to, is a good place to aim.  The 5 guidelines are very good to always have in mind.

agreeing, too. I don't really see the need to go to an all liquid diet for two days just to restart your program--just go back to basics and eat protein rich foods, skip the extras. it's not like you're actually going to shrink your pouch in five days.

I began the 5 dptd and gave it up in less than one day ... I just couldn't do liquids only.  What I did instead was focus on lots of protein and totally eliminate processed carbs and even fruit (for now.).  I am a firm believer that carbs are healthy, but I was literally going hog wild (pun intended).  I'm pretty much following an Atkins diet for a few days and will gradually add back healthy carbs.   As for the NEVER snack between meals ... Well, never is a long time.  And some of us MUST snack due to low blood sugar.  To think that a human being will never have a snack isn't realistic.  My surgeon actually recommended 5 mini-meals a day for the first year ... I have to continue to do that b/c of hypoglycemia.
