Anyone have hypoglycemia?
Losing weight and having hypoglycemia feels almost impossible. I am doing ediets low gycemic diet but it still seems hard to lose weight. With hypoglycemia you have to eat every two to three hours and if not you get really sick, shaking.. it sucks..
I had hypoglycemia before my surgery and it's just become worse since. I'm also anemic so if i don't get enough iron i'm tired all the time so it's difficult to have enough energy for my day at work 8hours then my mom job 24/7 and then try to work in excersise. So anyone else have hypoglycemia ? would love to hear how you manage and any ideas.. thanks.. misty

I currently have the same symptoms but I'm waiting for the doctor to verify the condition. I eat every 2 to 3 hours but it's minimal. A cheese stick or a protein bar (10 gm). I'm not sure if that helps at all. I did find multi grain brown rice crackers at Trader Joes that I can have that won't dump me out so long as I keep to just four at a snacktime (that's 1/4 of a serving). I have those with a little peanut butter or soy butter as a snack. I've heard that it isn't the size of the snack so a small one seems to work between meals. I'm finding that I can't really eat anything white carb related. No rice, no pasta, no bread (even whole wheat), no potatoes. Protein and veggies, that's just about it.
I don't have the problem of not being able to lose weight but not being able to add it at this point. I'm 18 months out and about 6 pounds below the surgeon's goal for me. I never expected to lose 120 pounds. I expected to lose 80 pounds and stop.
Yes, RNY worked for me but it also requires a lot of work from me!

there are a few post ops that have developed "reactive hypoglycemia" which is a form of hypoglycemia a year and a half or later post op. obviously if you had hypoglycemia before surgery, you know how to take care of it and keep your blood sugar level. Eating every 3 hours isn't always a bad thing, doing this speeds up your metobolism, that with exercise is a great combination for weight loss.
Are you journaling? maybe that will help you see the amounts of food you're taking in and you could reduce it to help you lose weight or add more exercise to help the weight loss? I eat 6 times a day (sometimes 7) and have been able to get to my goal. I have a protein shake in the morning, breakfast, snack, lunch, snack, dinner, snack and sometimes a late night snack. not only does eating often keep my blood sugar normal, but it gives me extra fuel for work outs :)
good luck!

I had my first hypoglycemic episode at about 2 yrs out. I've learned what will trigger one for me (eating simple carbs on an empty stomach, eating sugary carbs like a piece of cake), I've learned how to recognize I'm heading south (I have become shaky, disoriented, sweaty, my lips go tingly), I confirm with a glucometer (the lowest I've measured my BS is 38! I feel good around 75), I know how to raise my blood sugars (right away, I eat a carb+protein combo, like cheese and crackers). The most important thing for me is to eat every 3 hrs or so and stick to a very healthy way of eating, then I don't have these issues often. My surgeon described to me a syndrome some wls people get where their hypoglycemia is chronic....it's not common, and it is very serious. I don't have that, thankfully. Anyway, I hope you're addressing these issues with your surgeon and he's either giving you the appropriate tests or medication, or referred you to a nutritionist. Blood sugars that are very uneven all of the time can be detrimental to other body organs.
thank you for all your replies. They have helped. I do have reactive hypoglycemia. I don't journal and really need to. I also need to be more consistent with excersie. regardless of how I feel. I wasn't sure i had hypoglyecmia before surgery I just think i did. but regardless I do have to get it under control so i can live a healthy life. I"m going to start journalling and have been referred to a nutrisionist. so again thanks for all the info.. misty
