South Beach Diet

I am a year and a half out from successful RYN.  YES!  I have begun to see the bad habits of carb eating return.  UGH.  I do, thankfully, still have some dumping syndrome effects which make drastic overeating very uncomfortable.  YEAH!  I am thinking that following the South Beach diet may be benefical to getting rid of the carb craving and also be good for me.  I think this may make me more accountable of what I eat.  Any thoughts?  Anyone else tried it?  Thanks so much.  Also, a Happy New Year to you all.

From what I understand it is pretty similar to a RNY post op diet anyway. Go for it. Suz

The South Beach Diet is very much the way I eat.  I didn't do the induction phase - for my purposes it really wasn't necessary.  I started with Phase 2.  It includes a good mix of protein, veggies and whole grains, with limited fruits, although I eat all kinds. I also went to the website and subscribed to the free newsletter.  They send me tips and recipes that really fit in with the way I am trying to eat now. I think it would be a great start for your new year! Cheers!  Barb

Thanks, Suz and Barb.  I think I will start today.  Isn't it funny that I still 'need' a 'diet plan' to feel comfortable.  Been doing it for so many years:)  I think it will just cause me to rethink what exactly I am eating, something I have not really had to do for some time now.  I have been concerned that I might start that slippery slope back.  Thanks for your support!

I am in about the same boat as you are -- I'm 15 months out. I noticed pretty quickly that the south beach diet is pretty much the same as the post-WLS diet plan that my doctor gave me. I probably do a few more fruits than the south beach people recommend -- keeps me regular if you know what I mean. Other than that, its a good plan. P.S. I slipped badly at Christmas because of all the goodies everywhere. I'm getting back up on the horse and taking back control starting yesterday.

Judy,  I understand about the Christmas goodies!  We had a great Christmas with tons of friends and family over.  Now there are much too many little tins and boxes of cookies and fudge and good stuff all around.  Just got back from Trader Joes with some better choices and the bad stuff is going to go out the door!

Stay in Control!  Plan!

this is only my experience but when I did phase 1 of the south beach diet at about two weeks I was very sick. The pain of eating as much meat and cheese as they request did not sit well with me at all. I ate lots of veggies but still the meat (chicken & fish) was too much. I can eat meat at dinner and eggs for breakfast but if I have meat more than that it's painful reaction. I know some people don't eat meat at all but the south beach diet is very hard without it. Maybe starting with phase 2 makes a difference.. good luck. misty
