Antibiotics...post WLS

A question to the experienced group.....   I recently had some surgery to remove a basal cell skin cancer and plastic surgery to repair the large facial wound.  In order to prevent infection,  I took oral Augmentin both series of surgeries (three so far, one more to go).  The last time, the antibiotic tore me up.  In fact, it seems to not have been very effective and infection bloomed in the suture line. My question.  How long does the antibiotic stay in my system as a RNY patient?  I am one week past the meds now and still must know where the bathroom is at all times.  The docotr switched me to an injectable antibiotic to handle the infection. I am two years post op.  I am an insulin dependent diabetic, but very controlled since WLS.   Thanks in advance for your comments. Vicky

Vicky, I am on long-term anti-biotics for acne ... I take Ampicillian twice a day, and I've had no problems at all.  Unsure how long it stays in our system, but I doubt it's any different for us pre or post-op.  Perhaps you should try eating yogurt to replace the healthy bacteria that the antibiotic kills off. Check out PROBIOTICS.  I take one that has 11 of the good bacteria.  They will help you tremendously but it takes a while. Google "probiotics" I hope you feel better soon!

I have two sides to my brain - a right side and a left side.  The trouble is sometimes there is nothing left in the right side and nothing right in the left side.

Vicky, Antibiotics will kill the good and bad bacteria in your colon/intestines which is why you have to know where the bathroom is.  As far as how long it stays in your system it depends on what your taking most of them you take for a short period of time (5 days) and they are in your system for 10 days.  Rule of thumb...if you take it for 2 weeks it will be in your system an additional 2 weeks.  Be careful taking stool softeners while on antibiotics if you have to find the bathroom frequently.  Use them sparsely.  Also if your on birth control pills the antibiotics will decrease the effectiveness of your pills so be careful.  Hope this helped answer your question. Blessings, Alicia

Thanks for your tips!  I am back on oral Augmentin again.  I am eating live culture yogurt to help.  I will look for the probiotic help, too. Thanks! Vicky
