MILK?

our bodies absorb 500 mg at a time.  I get ones designed for bariatrics, for absorption purposes.  I gt mine from building blocks. make sure yours has magnesium in it, calcium needs magnesium to work best.  Also I'd agree that 1500 is a good amount, but not at the same time, and not with iron, as that hinders absorption. blessings Tami

My surgeon and nut prefer we get protein from milk -- during the weight loss phase and maintenance.  The protein and calcium are beneficial to our health -- I personally use organic, the regular bothers my tummy.

I LOVE milk; unfortunately, it no longer loves me.  *sigh*  I drink my protein shakes mixed with soy milk.  That I can tolerate quite well.  I'm holding steady on my weight loss and have not had any regain.   I do what works for me - your mileage may vary.

It's 12-13 g sugar. I used it to fatten up my kids and aging father.

Since you can't absorb much of the protein and calcium in it, then you're left with just the 12g of sugar.

I actually signed a contract with my doc to not touch milk again. I do other dairy products, but milk (because it's sugar). So, I've supplemented the protein & calcium since day 1.

There are a few important things here and new this was going to be a hot button on the grad boards almost as much as drinking diet soda!  What does YOUR sugeon and nutritionist say? Ask them to 'defend' their rationale no matter what their answer is. For me personally, my nutritionist had us do the preop diet with carnation instant breakfasts mixed with milk six times a day and since then she has consistantly encouraged milk.  She warned that some of us would not tolerate it well after surgery and some of us would.  That being said, I am from Wisconsin.  If my surgeon or nutritionist had made me sign a paper saying I would never drink milk again, I would have needed some STRONG written evidence before even thinking about doing it.  I was worried I would be the one who couldn't absorb milk and would be devestated, but I wasn't so all is right in my world.  I drink a quart of milk consistantly each day and usually only organic.  I don't do it for calcium and usually not because I need the protein as I have my supplements as well; I do it because I LOVE milk. It's the cheesehead in me.  I don't know if one day soon I will gain 30 pounds and go back to the nutritionist and have her tell me I gained weight because I drink too much milk, I doubt it though.   I think the most important thing is to know the mind of your bariatric team and if it conflicts your wishes, you still get to make your own INFORMED decision.  If you aren't in love with milk and its easy to exclude in your diet, try it for awhile and see what happens.  At least you'll know YOUR body and its reactions.  You've seen how each of us is different in this and I try to live by the post-op rule that I can't speak definitively on much about gastric bypass because our surgeons are so different and so are our bodies.   Rachael--3 glasses down so far today.

milk is a healthy food, im not sure why you would avoid it, unless it makes you ill. i use skim plus milk in my coffee, and early out used it in my protein drinks. i use it when i make sf pudding or any recipe that calls for regular milk.   the sugar in mil****urs naturally  so i dont see the harm. but always ask your doctor or nut first if you are in doubt. good luck, jacki

Sugars in milk and fruit is not the same as sugars in soda and other junk food.  These sugars are more complex and the bonds are harder for our bodies to break down and digest ... Therefore, they do not affect our insulin levels the same way.   Annette

Evelyn, I don't drink milk because of the carbs in it.  I try to keep my carbs low.  The only time I have milk is when I have a Starbucks latte made with half and half.  Half and half has the least amount of carbs.  I make my protein shakes with ice and water and SF syrup.

I use skim milk in my weight control oatmeal.  It boosts the protein level.  (oatmeal=7gm, milk=8gms) Debbie
