Very Scared - - Need HELP!!!

Good Morning All: I've had RNY on 9/29/03 and lost 160 lbs.  I've gained 50 lbs. and am very very scared.  It is awful.  I've tried the 5 day restart and return back to old ways of "snacking". Maybe I have a pouch size problem.  Here's an example of the "Amount" I can consume for breakfast.  I did this to see just what I was able to eat.          - three 3 oz containers of carb/sugar control yogurt          - one medium banana          - 1 1/2 cups of diabetic Glucerna Cereal I'm thinking of seeing my surgeon to see if my pouch is too large or whatever is going on.  Can't keep going up and up.  I'll be back to where I started from and I certainly don't want to have that happen. Last year, when I had gained 25 lbs the surgeon said that that was normal and that if it became a problem, he would review the lapband over my RNY.  Has anyone had this done?  Were there any complications?  How was the outcome from this 2nd operation? I need responses.  I'm getting very very stressed out about this. Kathy P. 11/29/07 at 1040

Hi Kathy,

I had surgery a couple weeks after you and am in the same boat.  Whether on not I've stretched my pouch isn't so much the issue...its the snacking that you mentioned!

I can eat quite alot too...especially of soft foods and "slider foods" (empty carbs).  Someone would never know I've had RNY by watching me eat most days, I'm ashamed to say!!  I will say though that if I eat like I'm supposed to...protein first, slowly, no drinking....I fill up on less and don't get hungry.

I don't mean to sound harsh...because I'm in the same position....but I really think you need to get on top of your behavior first..then if the weight doesn't stop climbing and start coming off, then talk to a surgeon.  Let's face it, you could have the tiniest pouch around and still gain weight if you eat the wrong things and too frequently...which is precisely what I've been doing the past 18 months or so!  Perhaps the type of "doctor" you and I need to visit is a counselor to identify why we're not taking care of our bodies properly...just like we always used to pre-op!

Good Luck to you...and congratulations at taking the first step toward getting back under control!  The slippery slope is very slippery..I know, I'm on it too!!

For the most part the foods you listed are indeed "slider" aka soft calories.  They are going to slide through the stoma. How much dense food can you eat?  How many ounces of chicken, beef, etc? Kathy

I really can't each much more than one boneless, skinless chicken breast, or one pork chop, or one hamburger at one sitting.  These would be just by themselves without vegetables, cottage cheese, bread, noodles, etc. In fact, I get really full when just eating one of those shown above.   I need to get my head straight and start eating those things for the 3 meals and have protein drinks/bars in between or in evening when I want to snack.  Would that be good to start doing? We're so use to sitting down to a meal with meat, vegs, etc.  I'm going to just need to do the meats only given that they make me full after eating them. Look forward to hearing from others. This sounds like a good plan to me.  Try it for 2 weeks and let us know how you are doing...

Thank you for your response.  I sincerely appreciate it. Dinner was already planned as my cousin (my neighbor) prepares the meal on Thursday.  I'll do the "meat" only thing with protein drink/bar in between starting tomorrow.  I'll let you all know how I make out.  I'm praying this will keep me moving in the right direction to where I need to be. You might check out the book "The Beck Diet Solution" because it really isn't about any particular diet but about getting your head right.  It is based on cognitive behavior therapy--something used with great success for many bad habits.  It is all about changing your thinking to change your behavior.  And since it sounds like grazing is a problem for you, this might help.

Good luck,

Sally

Thank you.  I'll look into that book the next time I'm at the mall.

I'll keep you all updated.  I'm going to try to keep focused and not do the grazing thing.   Kathy
