Hi everyone, I am still around, weight is down from last week. YEAH.  Been seeing a ENT. Have had test, it is tenative, but he is thinking I could have Meniere's disease.  He wants me off of sodium for six wk's.  He said NO sodium. None.  The protein we drink has sodium, no egg yokes, no turkey bacon, no caffine, no choco, lots more.  I am pretty upset.  I just got myself back into my good eating habit.  I thought I was letting up on the salt.  any suggestions.  Buckeye gal

Hi I have Meniere's disease, diagnosed several years ago and was told I had to learn to live with it!  So I am very interested that it looks like you can control ti with diet. Actually mine has been worse lately - but thinking about it I have increased my sodium so it may be connected.  I'm going to be watching to see any other posts on this. Ruth

Home Treatment

The vertigo (spinning sensation) of Ménière's disease may be easier to tolerate if you lie down and hold your head very still during an attack.

Changing your diet may reduce the chance of having another attack of Ménière's disease. Eating a diet low in sodium and limiting the use of caffeine and alcohol may reduce the frequency of attacks. However, diet changes will not reduce the intensity or duration of a vertigo attack that has already begun. For more information, see:

Eating a low-sodium diet for Ménière's disease.

Doing balance exercises and taking safety precautions for attacks of vertigo may help

This has being going on for about four months now.  ENT Dr. has done different test on me.  Thank you for your responce.  Buckeye Gal

hi tena:    i was diagnosed with menier's disease about five years ago.  it began wth ringing in my right ear.  then i started having the dizzy spells.  at first it happened rarely.  i was diagosed with meniers and they treated it with diet modifications and medication.    the meniers had nothing to do with my weight loss.  my surgery was almost three years ago.  it does help to avoid salt and caffeine but the disease continued to progress - in my case - i ended up needing a labrynthectomy (the inner ear nerve was cut) so that the dizzy spells would stop.      the surgery left me deaf in my left ear, except for the tinnitus, which is still an issue.  i ended up needing balance therapy since balance is controlled by the inner ear.  and after the surgery i developed a neuroma behind my ear at the surgical site.  it causes me headaches behind my eye as well as neck and shoulder pain radiating from the neuroma.    i've struggled with the results of the surgery since last november but would do it again if i had to.  my dizzy spells were uncontrolled.  i would flop over in the middle of a meeting at work, or walk into walls, or get a spell while i was driving.  so i was unable to function.    you asked for suggestions, tena, so here goes:  stay away from salt and caffeine.  it helps.  i hope the ent can pin down for you something that will stop or slow the progression of the disease.  i know that not everyone ends up with as many issues as i did.  and i hope you're one of those.    also, if you want further information regarding this issue, you can type in 'menier's disease' on the net for further information and find out lots more about what others have tried and what might work for you. good luck

Hi Dorthe,  Thank you for all of your information.   You had a bad time of it.  Mine isn't that bad (yet).  I have been to the site and have read that some have had to have surgery for it.  The Dr told me NO salt.  No caffine, losts more no' no's.  That is very hard.   Thank you for your reply Buckeye gal

hi buckeye:    you're welcome.  i hope your's doesn't progress as mine did.  i know the salt and caffeine restrictions are difficult.  i found them impossible to cut out, but i did cut down on them.    good luck, tena.

I have heard a supplement called lipoflavanoid helps. Have you tried it?

i tried lipoflavanoid for a couple months with no noticeable change.  ended up tossing the rest of the samples out.  the dr gave me quite a few samples, so i suspect the pharmacies were giving them out freely at the time.  but if they work for you, more power to you.

good luck
