Reactive Hypoglycemia - my trial, error & research...

I read over 300 posts on the grads board and found both of those great articles.  Unfortunately (or fortunately for my sake) I was able to conduct the findings of my first post on my own.  One weekened I purposly ate high carb foods without protein to see if it would happen, tested my blood, other weekends I set my alarm to wake up long enough for a protein shake every 3 hours to see if it would avoid crashes, ate foods with protein, skipped a meal to see how I'd feel, used different foods to stop a crash to see what helps and what doesnt, etc, etc, etc.. Feeling this way is awful (and dangerous), everyone who has this problem should be pro-active to find ways to stop it.  The nurse at our clinic has only seen 5 patients with this problem, (knock on wood) within our surgery month group that posts daily there are only 2 people with the problem (myself and one other) which is why I said its "rare" instead of common.  Its an awful feeling, keeping my fingers crossed in hopes that less people find this as a health issue. :)

There ARE studies on it, but for the moment, they conclude that it's our fault for lousy eating.

And I can't agree with that, since I've crashed for no reason at all, and sometimes as many as 6-8 hours after my last high protein meal.

And I ate bread and potatoes with impunity for many years, so I can't even nail it on that. Until now. With basically 6 months with very few carbs at all, NOW I am having the same reaction you described. Eat a potato, crash for sure. Why now at 13 yrs, I have no idea, except apparently my body just loved this all protein approach! LOL I lost wt, so that worked

It is so strange that I'm reading your post tonight.  I was in the heart hospital ER last night thinking I was having a heart attack!   I've been having these "spells" daily for a about two weeks.  Last nights was terrible!  Of course the doctors said your heart is fine.  Then I feel like I'm nuts!  I'm so happy to have read your post and the articles.  I am so worried too about gaining weight.  Do you  think I should talk to by family doctor and see what he wants to do or where do you think I should start!? Thank you so much for your time and patience.  My husband thought he was losing me last night. Sue

have you been able to talk to your WLS doctor about it?  Journaling really helps, jot down your foods, amounts and the times you ate them to see whats causing the problem (time eaten, foods or both).  that way you have more information to supply the doctor with.

I was very nervous about eating every 3 hours because I was afraid to gain weight, but if I don't eat, I'll get the shakes and since hypoglycemia doesnt supply  the right amount of insulin to your brain during attacks, I'd rather eat instead of risking damage.  keeping a journal will also help monitor how much you're eating so you don't over eat and gain.

good luck with your progress, keep us posted on how youre doing :)

Thanks for the extremely informative posts!  I sometimes get sweaty for no reason and think I may have very mild RHG.  I'm watching it very carefully! Michele

journal if it starts happening more so you can show your doctor what time its happening, what foods you're eating when it happens, etc.  its great you caught it early!

Wow!!  You wrote my story and don't even know me.  I started having problems with my sugar droping about a yr ago.  I do test my sugar two times a day and sometimes more than that.  I thought I was watching my foods, but I see I need to do some research.  I just want to say thank you for all the work you have done and posting it.  Thank you Buckeye gal

I'm glad my post helped Buckeye Gal, I did so much research (and still am) because I absolutely hate the "crash" feeling.  Its so unpredictable and when people are around you, its just a worse feeling!  Try sticking to complex carbs for a day and see what it does or eat every 3 hours.  White potatoes really do me in, other than the form of potato chips (a handful or less), I can do a little pasta without crashing, but there has to be a protein with it (like ground beef).  keep researching it, its not easy, but its our bodies and we need the best for it :)

Stevia IS approved as a "food supplement"... I take it to control sweet cravings. But it is NOT approved as a sweeening agent. Go figure.

Some "vicious" side effects can include gum and dental health and decrease in sweet cravings.

I never liked to add it TO sweeten (in crystals, tablets or liquid), but if it's already IN something, it's perfect.

The plant itself is much like mint, and the leaf on the tongue is immediately sweet and slightly anise-like. You can buy the plant at a nursery, but it's the extract that helps dental and craving issues.

Have you tried plain liquid Stevia?  I find it so much less bitter than the packets!  Last night I used it to make lemonade with organic lemons and a few drops of liquid stevia.  no aftertaste at all. Obviously with the packets, its an adjustment, but we adjusted to nasty things like aspartame, why not adjust to something better for us right? My bf opened the green stevia packet, dipped his finger in and tried it, i wouldn't suggest that to anyone, but in foods or drinks its great!  :)
