Hi, I have had surgery about four years ago. I am deficient in B-12, anemic, and hypoglycemic.  I have been getting B-12 shots for a while now. About a week ago, i got a really dizzy, my hands, feet and head felt numb and tingling. The dizziness has gone away but not the numbness. Has anyone expierenced this? It can't be B-12 because i take shots, so I'm at a loss.

How's your other B vitamin levels?  B1 or B6 deficiences can cause numbness and tingling.  http://www.merck.com/mmhe/sec12/ch154/ch154f.html http://www.merck.com/mmhe/sec12/ch154/ch154i.html Have you had your vit D and calcium checked?  If you are severely deficient in calcium and/or vitamin D, there is a condition you can get called tetany that can cause numbness and tingling.  I have that and thought for most of the year I had multiple sclerosis and went through all the testing for that and the symptoms mirror MS; come to find out it was tetany and we're treating with massive doses of vitamin D to help my body better absorb the of course, increased dosage of calcium.  I also have osteoporosis and am being treated with Boniva in IV form.   Here's some links on tetany: http://www.infoplease.com/ce6/sci/A0848274.html http://www.medterms.com/script/main/art.asp?articlekey=13312 http://www.wrongdiagnosis.com/t/tetany/symptoms.htm So I'd contact your surgeon and/or PCP and get a full blood workup done to check all your nutrient levels to see where you're at on those.  Could be you need to increase your supplements.

Is anyone actually testing your B12 levels, or going by rote that monthly is good?

New "low" level is 800 per newer studies, so if you are even at 400, you could have damage occuring.

Yes.  I had the severe dizziness last summer and was found to be severely anemic (spent 10 weeks getting IV iron).   They did MRIs because I had a vertigo-type condition from then-on out.  It got somewhat better until this summer when my arms and legs and feet and hands all starting tingling and then started really, really hurting.  Bloodwork showed low B12 (despite four years of monthly B12 shots), low iron (still!), low Vitamin D and low blood calcium.  They have told me it is small fiber neuropathy from nerve damage related to malnutrition.  I tried Cymbalta, it failed, and I'm now taking Neurontin.  The pain is getting better, but when I lay my arm on the table, my whole arm starts to tingle.  My legs tingle constantly, especially when the back of my thighs/knees are pressing on a chair or something.  I am very scared and cannot get a straight answer from anyone.  They are basically telling me that if my pain is controlled, what's the problem?  Um, perhaps that I'm only 28 years old and I don't want to be on these severe medications for life.  My question is what they will do to STOP the malnutrition and prevent further nerve damage.  So far no answers.  Anyone seen this and have a doctor treating them properly?  The kicker is the 20lbs I've gained in the last year while dealing with this pain.  Not only has the surgery lead to pain and problems, but the ironic thing is that I'll be fat and in pain, basically back where I started.

Well first off Id like to say you are still much skinnier them you started off...i try to think about that when im going through my "fat" stages. I can sooooo relate though. Second, it is so good to hear from someone that is going through the same thing. My doctor had taken all my blood work and kind of shrugged it off as well, yet im 31 and have tingling in my head, hands and arms. I swear its the vitamen thing so I take about 12 vitamens a day. B-1, B-6, B12, Folic Acid, Vitamen C, D, E, Iron and Calcium. I hoping that is going to help the problem. I also get the Vitamen B-12 shots. What did they tell you to do to get your calcium and Vitamen D up. Well thanks for the response and I hope you start feeling better.

They have me on 50,000 mg/week of prescription Vitamin D, but I'm also taking the dry Vitamin A&D (per Vitalady's site) on my own.  I've been taking two Twinlab Calcium Citrate Capsules four times per day (300mg Calcium per serving).
