Stomach Acid?

I am 2 years and 5 months out from RNY. I went from 247 to 132 and now I bounce between 135 and 145. I have been having some issues lately that are really bothering me and I don't know if it's normal or not. I have tried to call my doctor but can't get through to him (military base).  2 things have been happening that have been concerning me. First, sometimes my stomach will act up and hurt horribly, so bad that it will make me cry for about 45 minutes after eating. It will be my entire abdomen, and into my lower back. There seems to be no rhyme or reason to why it will hurt, just some days it does no matter what I eat, and others it doesn't really hurt. Secondly, I have been tasting stomach acid coming back up after eating, if I lay down. Sort of like acid reflux, but I don't have constant heartburn, it will just be sort of a burp and stomach acid mixed with the food that I ate will come up and go back down (sorry so gross!) I never experienced this before, only the past few weeks. I thought we didn't really produce stomach acid in our pouches anymore, so I am wondering if anyone else experiences stomach acid coming back up, or if anyone thinks this is normal. Any help would be appreciated! I read the graduate board daily, but rarely post. Thanks guys!

Pain of any type is not normal. The pain into your belly and back could be gallbladder issues.  I'd see your surgeon and then a gastroenterologist (for an EGD to inspect your pouch for ulcers and fistulas and such).  Gallbladder would be checked via an ultrasound or HIDA scan (nuclear meds test). Good luck! Kathy

My GERD came back 3 months after WLS. I take medication for this. Good luck. Please contact your doctor. The pain in the stomach does sound like gall bladder or could be from excess stomach acid. Our poiches still produce acid and can cause pain.

The pain could be from a number of things, but what comes to my mind is gall bladder or ulcer.  I have had the same thing happen to me when I eat and lie down soon thereafter.  I just do not eat and lie down.  Also, you might try taking a pepcid daily.  It will help control stomach acid, and will also aid your stomach if you are developing an ulcer.  Most of all:  See your doctor.  This needs checked out.  Let us know what you find out.
