14 months out, smoking question

As of October 31, I will be 14 months out. This morning I was at 129. I bounce between 129 and 133. I can't fgiure out the ryhme or reason just happens. I still don't eat bread, sugar, or carbonated drinks. Hope I never start back! I am looking into plastic surgery. I can only afford a TT, which is fine with me. I hope to have it in December. I started back smoking about 6 months after surgery and now have to quit again for this surgery.  Any advice? I don't want to gain a pound from not smoking! Just wanted to say "hey".  Holli

Hi Holli, I can sympathize with you.  I started back about a year after surgery.  It won't keep you from gaining.  I read a report last week that proves that it doesn't control weight, or help control it.  I do want to tell you what my Surgeon said about smoking.  He told me to quit immediately.  Something about smoking causes ulcers in the stomach and colon.  It can be fatal.  So hang in there and do whatever it takes to stay off of the cigarettes.  As far as not gaining - my only suggestion is stick to basics and exercise faithfully.  Best of luck..

Hi Holli, it is very important to stop smoking before surgery (of course you know it is bad), but it can cause problems during anesthesia and delay your healing after surgery. Those complications can be serious, much more so than gaining a pound or two. Al the best Sher

It depends on the surgeon. I consulted with three different ones. One wouldn't touch me until I'd been smoke free for 6 months. The other two said 6-8 weeks. I quit 2 months before my PS and haven't had any complications. I didn't gain any weight when I quit. Since May, my weight has been bouncing between 130 and 132. Typical necrosis complication rate is 1-2%. The necrosis rate in smokers is closer to 60%. That stat right there should be all the motivation you need to quit. That and the prospect of that hot, new, tight tummy! Good luck.

That is what I have to remind myself of! Having a flat stomach for the FIRST time in my life would be awesome!!! HOw bad does it hurt...mild or severe discomfort or pain! I am so nervous and I don't know why. I did not have any nervous feelings about the WLS! I am not sure why the TT makes feel scared! Holli

The tummy tuck is a completely different ball of wax from RNY. With RNY, I worked 4 hours the day I came home from the hospital. With the tummy tuck, I was completely off work for 4 days and then for the next 5 days only worked 5-6 hours/day. Obviously it's much more invasive and my experience is it takes much longer for your energy to return. It's not as painful as you'd think. I had an On-Q pain pump for the first four days and then you just have to make sure to stay ahead of the pain. If they tell you to take your pain meds every 6-8 hours, take them every 6. Once you start hurting, it's hard to get it back under control. I hadn't had a flat stomach since I was 4 years old. It's definitely worth quitting smoking for.

For me, quitting smoking was one of the easiest things I'd ever done and I'd smoked for 30 years.  I used patches for only about a week, then took Celexa, a mild antidepressant.  The Celexa helped so much, it really took the edge off.  Talk to your Doc about it. It's been 5 years and I've never had a cigarette since.  If only losing and maintaining weight could be so easy! Michele

That is inspirational! Five years!! The thing is I hate smoking! I hate the way it smells, the taste in my mouth! YUCK! I started in college along with massive amounts of coffee and have not been able to shake either habits since! Holli
