Post Ops problems with water weight?

This is a cross post with the BMI over 50 board. This has always been an issue but over the past 8 months or so I have really noticed it getting worse.  Now it is just at the point of complete ridiculousness.  Here's the story.  My weight fluctuates DRAMATICALLY.  I am not talking about your 2 to 3 pound fluctuations, I am talking anywhere from 5 to 15 pounds!!!!   I have two issues - first weight.  I my weight can shoot up 10 pounds over the course of three days and go back down over the next three to five days.  I have high blood pressure, so I do not eat "a lot" of salt, some but I don't go overboard.  I know crackers and pretzels will blow me up so I don't have those very often. But say I have a small one-ounce bag today and another tomorrow, I will be up five pounds the following day.  That seems excessive.  When auntie flo comes to visit, my weight will shoot up as much as 14 or 15 pounds and not only my belly gets bloated but also my thighs.  I can literally look at them and see they're swollen.  The week to 10 days after auntie flo leaves, my weight goes back down.  I do not think it is a "fat gain" issue per se because I count weigh****cher's points and I stick pretty close to my allotment.  Besides no way I could gain five pounds of "body fat" in three days and lose it over the next three days.  It's getting frustrating and I don't know if my RNY has altered something that causes me to retain fluid like crazy. The second issue -also over the past six or so months.  My stomach gets bloated and distended after almost every meal - no matter what I eat.  As I sit right now, the waistband of my skirt is a bit loose.  In ten minutes or so I will have a weight control oatmeal for breakfast and my stomach will blow up and the waist band will get so tight I feel like I am going to bust out of it.  It will go down over the next few hours - right in time for the next meal then the cycle restarts all over again. I am just wondering if anyone else is having these issues.  Thanks.

Well I thought I was the only one! I do not have the bloating after eating but the huge fluxuations make me insane!  I will be 8 years out in December and I only starting having the issue over the  last year or so. I do cardio 5-6 days a week, see a trainer twice a week and do pilates twice a week and my weight changes dramatically from day to day sometimes. It has gotten to the point with my frustration with it that my Trainer had my DH hide my scale. It is so hard to stay motivated when I weigh 8 or 10 pounds more then a day or two ago.  Physcially I am very healthy. Just had a complete physical and almost perfect blood work. On thing my Trainer has suggested is maybe hormones. I will be 39 next month and I am definitely noticing other changes as well. I dont have the answer but I totally relate and it stinks!

Hey there!! I haven't seen you around here in SO long!!!! Its good to see you again!!!! Well, that does seem like pretty drastic gains/losses in such a short period of time and its definitely not a real gain. I suffered from high bp before having surgery and I had to take Lorazepam (water pill) daily b/c I would swell up due to the hbp~do you take anything for the hbp??? I also pack on 4-5lbs around that time of the month~I actually feel physically best the week after my period b/c everything goes back down and I appear my thinnest even if the scale isn't reading any lower than my norm.  I understand the stomach bloating~the only time this happens to me is if I eat carbs~even a limited amount. It will make my stomach bloat and actually appear ALOT bigger than it normal is, so needless to say I don't indulge in carbs very often b/c I hate that feeling. Does this happen to you even if you have a high protein/low carb or no carb meal???

Dear Tracey!  Nice to see you. Boy, oh boy could I have written your post.  The weight gain numbers might be tad different but I find I have the same problem.  I had the big quick gains as seen on the bouncing scale long before WLS.  It does, in my case, seem to be carbs and I'm still trying to figure out if it is wheat versus other things.  Human science project. I am also having the bloating issue. I hope we both find the answer. Hugs, Kathy

Thanks everyone for your help.  I've tried to pay attentioon over the past coupl of weeks and the post-meal bloating is really bad after oatmeal, raw fruit, or raw veggies - which is virtually every meal because I have one of those things with almost every meal.  I had a few pretzels last night and no problem at all.  I think it's the raw veggies, fruit and oats.  I stopped brown rice becasue one teaspoon would make me miserable. Anyway, thank you all!!! hugs Tracy
