ulcerative colitis
I am almost 3 years out from Roux-en-Y and was just diagnosed with ulcerative colitis. I had posted on the board before as I was having lots of stomach issues with stomach bloating and pain. I have been through upper GI, endoscopy, MRIs, CTs and lots of blood tests. The final test they did was a colonoscopy and they did biopsies of the inflammation and this is what I have. I have an appointment with the GI doc to go over things in more detail. In the meantime they have started me on Asacol. I take four tablets twice a day. Anybody out there have this? If so how are you doing and what is your treatment?
My son had colitis, not sure if he had ulcers but he did have bleeding. They gave him antibiotics and something to bring more liquid into his colon and he got better and it doesn't bother him any more. The one thing it did teach him was how important hydration is. I don't know if you have been drinking a lot but make sure you drink water - jus****er - most of the time. Especially after WLS, you have to be so careful when it comes to hydration. I've ended up in the ER a few times for dehydration and your colon is the area that suffers the most.

I've suffered from UC since the age of 15! I will have periods of remission - some longer than others. I'd think your Asacol will be increased over time. This is what I know............
Asacol is DA BOMB! That stuff is a miracle!!!!!!!!!
It's an ASA for the colon -- hense Asacol. It is made to release it's antiinflammatory properties directly into the colon. It takes a little time to feel it but I had extreme success with Asacol. Some people stay on a lower dosage after the current flare up comes under control to prevent another flare up. I wanted to try to wean off and was able to. I went 2 or 3 years before I had another.
It's painful. You're fortunate that they found it and there are effective treatments. I suppose the clued you in on dietary changes as well. You'll start to figure out what are trigger foods.
If you have any questions, you can ask here or PM me!
I hope you feel better soon!
I have two sides to my brain - a right side and a left side. The trouble is sometimes there is nothing left in the right side and nothing right in the left side.
