protein ? for vitalady
Since I was without a computer, I'm kinda late here.
On B12, it was explained well that normal levels are older and newer studies indicate a "low" of 800, so if you are at 801, you're LOW. How much to take? And then, which kind? Do you want cynacobalamin? (most common) or methylcobalamin? (more expensive, but better absorbed) and someone said 500 and someone said 5000. But note that the usual measure is MCG, not mg. So, the 500 person meant mcg.
How much to take depends on your labs. Some ppl do splendidly on 500mcg per day for awhile, holding levels above 2000 (which is fine, it's where we're born). I held high levels with NONE for 6 yrs. As good as my docs were with iron, calcium, D, they flunked B12. LOL The amount you need to take is whatever it takes to get and hold 800+.
Protein. I take 180g in supplement daily, so that's 30g x 6. I have taken as much as 270, but that was to get the car monster to let go of me, so I didn't sustain that much. I will take more if I find my fingers wandering toward the cookies, tho, you know? I have a very radically distal RNY, so my BASE is much more than today's average RNY, though I know many who take as much as I do to control appetite and volume.
Some us the old fashioned Xg per Xkg of wt. Some use the 1g per 1# of weight, but then is that the NOW weight or the desired weight? For men, I really like to see them hold at 1g per 1# ultimately, but for women? Depends on what it takes to hold your levels and keep control of your intake. Many women use 1g per 1# of their goal wt. But that doesn't work for me since my normal wt is 110-115 and I drink 180g+.
You asked is it wasted. If you take in more than appx 30g (it's not like black and white 30g and one more is wasted), you are probably wasting part of that serving. As one person explained it to me, we only have "so many fingers in the intestine to grab the nutrition", so putting it awash doesn't mean we'll get more of it.
If you were to stand by my 180g as an experiement for 6 months, you'd have starter labs, ending labs and "how did you feel" for measures for your particular body. I'm a huge fan of collecting and comparing our own labs. Most surgeons do not run the full set we need, so when ppl say their labs are "fine", that means to me that the full set were not run. Everyone needs to adjust as time goes on.

P.S. My year + long absence has NOTHING to do with my WLS, or my type of WLS. See my profile.
