Nail Fungus

Diana, thanks for the reply.  You are wise to take good care of you nails.  I, too, have worn them from the professional salon for many years without  problems.  I just got lazy, careless, and cheap.  I saw my primary today (had to go for B12 shot anyway.)  He prescriped the generic drug of Lamisil for 60 days.  He says they should clear up within that time period.  My drug plans co-payment was only $20, so I am getting out pretty lightly for making some bad decisions. My primary says we have caught the fungus in the early stages and there should not be any bad damage done.  Thank Goodness.

That's extremely cheap...Unfortunately around here it was $40 to have them put on and $25 to have fills...I couldn't afford it back then but just really wanted it...I can afford it now so if it's only $20, I'm going this weekend...I doubt it's that cheap around here..
Yes, RNY worked for me but it also requires a lot of work from me!

I know I'm days late here. I saw you got the lamasil & if it's a pill, please don't stay on it lon. it's very hard on the liver and we already have liver issues. However, a short course is probably ok.

I had toenail fungus years ago an used tea tree oil. I just put a dropper full on it at least twice/day, more if I thought about it and it worked. Might be harder on a finger nail, tho, since we wash our hands many times through the day.

Sadly, you have to grow a new nail, so you can't like undo the damage you've got to THIS nail, but you can grow a new one in short order. My toenail took a stinking YEAR. Toes are way, way slower!

Thanks for the reply.  I asked the primary to ordered the generic brand through my mail order drug plan and I have not received it yet.   Ugh   It is the pill kind, but he said taking it for 60 days will be okay. Do you think that will be okay?  I think my primary forgets I had wls.  Patricia

SIXTY DAYS? OMG! My PCP would have screaming fits. We kinda sneaked my husband on it for toenail fungus for 2 weeks. Foot doc rx'd it, but PCP is dead set against it.

Will you be getting your routine set of labs in there anywhere? In ouir routine, liver enzymes are always checked, so then you'd have your last set of labs to compare with your new set and make sure they are consistent?

I had labs done two weeks ago at the surgeon's office and still do not have the results.  I plan to try to get a copy next week. Do you think I should take the Lamisil for the 60 days and then ask my primary to do labs on the liver?  Gee, I get tired of playing doctor.  I believe in taking care of myself, but some time I wish I could trust my doctors to take care of me. I certainy hear ya there. Whenever i get a new drug I run thru:
1. does it burn tummies?
2. will it interfere with any of my supps?
3. will my supps interfere with it?
4. do I need to adjust the dose up or down for my malabsorption?
5. if it's in timed release form, can I get it in immediate release and adjust the dose?

Whew. Wears me out sometimes, but I am SO on autopilot now. I don't expect them to know this stuff.

*I* cannot tell you to do or not do something different than your doc told ya, of course. But maybe you can remind them that you are RNY and as such, prone to liver crazies and you'd love, love, love to take this drug the full 60 days and kill that fungus totally dead, but gee, can they send you an order to test the liver enzymes in about 30 days?
