A question about dumping

Typically, how long does the dumping symptom last after surgery?  I've heard some people say that it last up to a year and some people say that it never really goes away.  Would like to hear from people who are a few years out.

Well, I'm almost 3 years out and I've never had what I would call a real "dumping" episode.  I've gotten the shakes  from too much sugar or too much  fat, but  I just never had the  same symptoms that some people describe as dumping!!  I did start having "more" problems with  low-sugar symptoms after about 2 years out. It seemed strange to me that  I seemed more sensitive to sugar the later out I was... But, I am probably NOT typical.  Some others can probably give you a better answer. I too have heard of some people who never had it and some for whom it never went away. Hope I've confused you enought now!!!    Hugs,   Piggybabe

I still have it and it changes all the time from foods to foods. I never know when it is going to hit.

Hi, Dumping syndrome is much worse in the very beginning right after surgery and probably up to the first year....but I do still have dumping syndrome from time to time at almost 2 yrs post op.   I never know when it will hit and what will set it off....isn't always the same thing eaten over again.  I will tell you that the severity of it is not nearly as bad the farther out that I get but still it is very uncomfortable.   Hope that answers you question. Hugs and blessings ~~~ Vivian

There are no set guidelines on dumping.  As with many aspects of WLS, individual results may vary. I myself am still dumping almost 20 months post op and I know that for myself hormonal changes often influence my sensitivity to certain foods.

Surgery results may vary, see dealer for details

I had occasional bouts of dumping the 1st 2 years, then after that rarelly if ever. Every once in a while I'll have one - usually if I eat something that is "suspect" with regard to sugar or fat (Mostly sugar). But as several others pointed out everyone is different so there's no "set time period" for experiencing dumping. I do know that if I NEVER experience it again it will be fine with me.

I'm over 2 years post-op and I dump.  I do not eat sugar but I can dump on fruits and other things now and then.  Some of it depends on what else I've eaten, time of day I'm eating it, hidden sugars in a sauce at a restaurant, etc. Kathy
