Comment of "fat" I just heard from a young lady...

I just have to vent.  I just came from my son's soccer game.  The referee's were terrible.  One young lady, 15 years old, yelled the comment, "yeah the FAT ref's sucked".  I was shocked.  Her mother didn't say a word, and it astounded me because their family (4) is sig overweight.  The mom even had WLS but is still obese. My friend spoke up and said "that wasn't very nice, couldn't you just say the ref's sucked"?  She said "no, they are fat".  The mom just sat there.  I chimed in that you don't describe people by their physical appearance.  We all argued for a few minutes, we tried to explain why you don't say things like that, the girl saw nothing wrong with what she said, and neither did the mother. I will probably always consider myself a fat person, and we have enough prejudice from the public that we shouldn't be teaching our daughters that it's ok. Thanks for letting me vent.  (My g/f is still ticked off) lol Tina

Good for the two of you to speak up! I worked in a ICU and had to hear many horrible remarks about heavy patients, before and after my weight surgery. I rarely spoke up before WLS, now I do sometimes. I just will not come of these idiots the pleasure of knowing I even heard what they said.   Mary

She shouldn't have used that term or said that they "sucked" in my opinion!! I would guess that her mother didn't say anything b/c she was embarrassed, but hopefully she said something in the car on the way home!! Good for you for speaking up and not just letting her comment pass~I'm sure everyone around was thinking it, but didn't have the  nerve to speak up especially with the mother sitting right there!

Somewhat relevant to what you are speaking about:  I know that in Hollywood the standards for physical appearance are different- but I only wish I could be as "fat" as Britney Spears was for her VMA performance.....
