Super Immunity?
This has been a topic on the DS forum from time to time, and I was wondering if every WLS group has had the same result.
It seems after the DS, people rarely get sick anymore. For instance, preop, I'd have 2 or 3 major upper respitory infections a year. The last couple of years preop I had broncitis (sp?) so bad that I had to take steriod sprays to reduce the inflamation. In addition, if one of my kids came home sick, I'd get sick....i'd basically spend every winter from Nov. to March with a runny nose and cough.
Post op?
I haven't been sick in the 19 months since I've had the DS. I've felt colds coming on, but the symptoms disappear by the next day.
Do RNYers, Lap banders, VSGers experience the same thing?
My theory is that it's vitamin related....
What about you guys/ladies...

I still get sick~in fact I was pretty much down with an upper respiratory thing all last week. I do still tend to pick up viruses easily from my kids too, so I guess I'm an unlucky one, LOL!!! Glad to hear that you've been super healthy though~that's a GREAT side effect!!!!

We had noticed it, too. WE had colds i***** and 1998. Got a raspy throat last winter. But since we work so closely with our staff, several of whom have little kids in school, it's amazing that we share keyboards, phones, other equipement and we don't get what they get. They noticed too.
We tell them that we take so many vites that the cooties are scared of us!
We are distal RNY (1994 and 1995)

P.S. My year + long absence has NOTHING to do with my WLS, or my type of WLS. See my profile.
Yep, same here.. I hardly ever get sick..I start feeling sick..and then it goes away as if by magic. Here I was thinking it was because I was doing a Mind over Matter thing, but the Post op makes more sense. Perhaps we are making better food choices, and perhaps its because we are more active and that boosts our immunity. I used to get sinus infections3x a year (if I was lucky..usually it was 5 or more) so bad that I'd miss out on a lot of work, and once I got one for the season, I got every cold that crossed my way.. Now..I'm hardly sick..and if I spike a temp or something..its gone by the next day adn I feel fine! :) I'm not going to question it..just accept it as another positive reason that I got surgery.. :)

My journey is successful, only because I remember what road I was on when I started it..and my determination to never go back to that road will keep me going in the right direction.

ok here's my theory for what it's worth: it has to do with the expansion and contraction of lungs. I too was known for my respiratory disorders (i had pneumonia so bad the cdc had to get involved). I feel that because of the morbid obesity my innards were being compressed by fat pockets which did not allow my lungs to inflate and deflate at the rate they were supposed to so some of the gunk (medical term for sputum etc) would kind of hang out and fester causing infections of epic proportions. Due to the addition of space in our rib cages AND the increase in vitamins, suppliments and proteins which help healing we are sort of healthier. ANDI
