Hi there!  I am not a grad so I hope you don't mind me posting.  I have lurked since a new postop on here.. every day, religiously.  I am 9 months out and down a total of 173lbs.. 48 of that was lost preop.  I am now 155 lbs and I will tell you, I eat 1000-1200 calories everyday and I lose 10 lbs a month.  Now I know everyone's metabolisms are different.  I run 2 miles 4 times a week and then I am a floor nurse that works 12 hour shifts twice a week.  So I am pretty active. I am sure I will slow down now that I am 15 lbs to goal.. but I find that even as grads, you all seem to eat so little.  I tend to land around 1000 but there are days I do go up to 1200.  I get lots of protein and keep my carbs as good carbs/complex only.  No sugars.. no trans fats.  I don't touch any bread products that are white.. no white rice, flour, bread, etc.. only whole grains.  I find most of you do this too.. I guess when you said you don't understand why you are losing.. well don't u think you need to be more towards 1300-1500 cals a day?  I mean I know I am only 9 mos postop and probably have no business posting here yet but..I know I lose on what you are eating.. My husband is 5 years out and has only gained 20 lbs total in 5 years.. he eats WAY more than he should (bad boy I know) but he must have a roaring metabolism.. it will catch up eventually.  But I think some WLS pt's tend to under eat out of fear.. we aren't meant to be on a child's calorie level forever.. even 1300-1500 cals isn't a normal person's caloric intake.. this would still be to lose weight for the average adult.  What do you think?  Am I totally off track here? I could be.  I know some people have had those metabolism breath tests and are always amazed at how much they COULD eat to maintain.  Usually its way more than they thought.  I know regain is common for many postop so I am not trying to calorie push to the point of that.. but a couple extra hundred calories a day is prob nececcary to maintain I would imagine.  Again, I could be wrong and hope you aren't upset for me chiming in.  I think you are awesome and done amazingly well.. I love your thoughts on protein levels, carbs and exercise.. its right up my ally.  I can't wait to join you all on the graduate board someday!  *hugs*

No you are absolutely right. As a baby grad it is hard to get rid of that "you are still fat" mentality and "if I eat more I will regain." Even though I am "what my friends say" is totally thin, I just dont see it. I should be added more carbs to my diet but just wont do it. I know I have to work these things out for myself and thats why I am on the board. I do know the right things to do, but darn if I just avoid them for myself. My nut said I should be at 1500 to 1800 calories a day.. Will I do it.. I am trying but inside,, no I am not trying to hit those numbers.. i am too affraid to regain my weight.

I am pretty happy that I have maintained the past couple of weeks except the day I dipped down to 119 and I actually lost that after a day I ate more than usual. how odd is that..

thank you for you comments and I know I need to continue to increase my calories.. I too notice many are still down at the low end.. that worries me too.. why do I need more if they dont and are doing well.. the mind is a funny thing... it dictates what we do either consciously or unconsciously. I just need to keep looking for what works for me and be daring enough to try a few things out..

Hi.. I am so glad you aren't offended by my comments.. I truly thought about deleting it after I sent it.  The mental part of this surgery is so amazingly difficult sometimes.. I told my husband now I know this is 90% mental and 10 % physical this postop life stuff.  Much of it is mind over matter.  Amazing how we get so phobic of things etc.. I am a carbaphob, always have been, prolli always will be.  That is why I cannot touch white processed flours of any kind or form.  But the whole grains taste so yummy postop and don't give me that "adrenalin rush" that white crackers or bread did before surgery and I am sure they still would now.  I have been very creative in my meals, I use my limitations to cook and find that creativity has helped me be successful even with my strict dietary guidelines I have set on myself.  But I do eat 1000-1200 cals in good for me foods and never feel the need to test the waters thank god.. well not yet.  I know... I know.. im too new, I hear that a lot.  But I haven't had any sugar to this day and honestly don't miss it one bit.  So hope I can continue that.  I think you are an inspiration to many on this board.  I like seeing what everyone is eating and I thank you for posting this daily.. from a lurker anyway.. i thank you and can't wait to participate with you all in 3 months.  thanks for all the insight.  Btw.. where is alecia?  I remember her doing this daily.. she not here with you guys any more?  *hugs*

you could be right at the threshold for your weight. Losing at 1200, maintaining at 1300 gaining at higher and stravation mode at lower. Since your protein is already so awesome, just add in another complex carb (like  a wheat roll) or something and see what that does for you. (Note to Carla: Ice cream is NOT a complex carb) heeehee Ice Cream My day was good. I remember what I ate. LOL  b - oatmeal s - protein drink l - 3 oz of sirloin steak, little  salad (with fork dipped in ranch dressing and not poured on salad) , baked potato (oops) and the dreaded yeast roll (my oh my oh my) s- ice cream sandwich (slipped up again - drats) d - turkey wrap - good girl s - slice of lunch meat and piece of string cheese (making myself be good here) s - protein drink  Calories  1189 fat 32 carb 97 protein 118 Now you see I went to my sons football game tonight. And I SWEAR - every person walking by was carrying chili cheese fries!!! It was horrible. I was practacily DROOLING!!!! But I knew I splurged at lunch with the carbs so I didnt eat anything at the game. I sat there and drank my bottle water (that cost me $2.00) ggrr.  Today - I'm glad that I made the right choices.

Not a complex carb... no................Now see you have desdtroyed my illusion... lol..I know it is bad,, its like my bread... i am eating a bowl of oatmeal as I type this so I am adding a good carb... see..

I went to my sons game the other day and everyone was walking around with nacho's.. it was killing me so I know how you feel.. darn.. sometimes I wish I could just eat something. the other day it was a wennershez (?) chilli cheese dog... yikes.. but than I remember how I feel now and that hot dog or nacho just doesnt seem so appealing any more.

Hey... you still had a good day.. look at the calories and protein.. very nice in deed.. and I am glad you made the right choice too.. you like to beat yourself up when you go for that little treat.

You are doing so great.. we both need to remember it's ok once in a while to enjoy food and our lives.. after all we have worked hard to get here.. just remember, dont enjoy it to much...lol.. regain sucks.

see ya tomorrow.

Yes, I do tend to beat myself up for little things. I've done so well over the past 2.5 years - I have tons to be proud of. And I really didn't do this to be on a "diet" forever, I did it for a life change, and to eat like "normal" people do.  I got my student ID badge today at school and DANG - I LOVE my picutre!!!! I have NEVER said that about a picture of me in my life!!!! I just can't believe that it's me in the picture.  Thanks for the encouragement!!! That's whats so great about this thread!!
