Okay-Malabsortion?

Are there people that TRULY ARE taking in the same calories-same exercising same EVERYTHING as when they are losing that first year..and then either STOP losing or even start to gain after that honeymoon period.Like our body gets "used to" the surgery and adjusts to it by not malabsorbing as much as early on? I am always searching for new research on how and what exactly we are malabsorbing.  I've come to believe that everyone malabsorbs differently and of course I am taking into account different cc's bypassed and so on....doctors are giving us lot's of different information on this.  My question is about our "honeymoon" period though.  I understand grazing and things slipping back into the diet and tracking food..I am asking about the physical part of the surgery and people who gain and really are doing everything the same.

Well, I can only speak for me but I had done NOTHING differently and, all of a sudden about a year and a half out (it's been 3 years now), I put on 5-10 pounds.  I have cut calories, upped exercise, yada yada yada - and nothing makes a difference.  I have come to believe that this is the weight I'm meant to be and I'm not going to kill myself anymore!  Very frustrating - but true!

I read the posts last week on this board about malabsorption, and also posted a question on the RNY board. My surgeon's office couldn't give me a clear answer and said "nobody's ever asked that before." I couldn't believe it. I was told by other RNY patients that their doctors say within about 2 years our bodies readjust and we absorb 100% of our calories again. Unfortunately, we never absorb the vitamins and will always need supplements. Now that sucks. That being the case, it is common for people who are doing everything right to gain back a little weight 2-3 years out. I'm trying to prepare myself for it, but I sure will hate it if it happens!

My doctor told me the weight gain is the result of our bodies adjusting our metabolism to a lower calorie diet. So, 1200, for example, isn't a weight loss calorie amount in the way it is at first because your body has learned that it won't be getting thousands of calories. Made sense to me...Best, Shauna
