Anybody taken Elfexor for depression??  Doctor gave me a prescription.  One place I read--improved appetite.  Another place--lose of appetite and weight loss.    I do not need to improve appetite---Believe me Paticia

I'm in the middle of transitioning from Celexa to Effexor for my depression.  I haven't noticed any increase in appetite but neither have I lost any extra weight.  I'll start paying attention as I increase my Effexor dosage.

There was one study done that showed Effexor might be effective in controlling binge eating. It was published in 2002. It is considered to be off label use which means Effexor is not approved by the FDA for this use. Loss of appetite is listed as one of the possible mild side effects of the drug (which probably explains the results of the study.) Hope that helps. Wilma

I started taking it about 4 months ago.  I was taking Prozac, but after about 8 years of it, I had to increase my dosage and it KILLED my libido.  That is why I was switched. I haven't noticed a change in my appetite either way.

Tell me if I am correct.  Is Elfexor XR  time released and Elfexor is a pill and not time released?  Is  Elfevor XR taken once a day?  Is Elfexor (the pill) taken twice a day?  I hope this makes sense. Thanks for the information.   I read your profile.  I hope things are going okay for you now.   Patricia

Thanks for the reply.  I have already ordered the med from my mail in drug plan.  I guess I will see what comes.  I think it is the regular kind--pills you can cut in thalf.  My primary knows I have had wls, but he is not very interested in helping me.  I have to beg and tell him what to do.  Sometimes he listens and sometimes he does not.  Good man, but... I am concerned about you.  Pls let me know how things are going for you when you have a chance. Patricia

For some ppl, the Effexor is the thing they needed. But you might have to adjust the dosage basedon the Xtended Release, as someone else mentioned.

Welbutrin is known for decreasing appetite and controlling cravings and I know it comes in IR (immediate release) and as a generic, so cheap. I was, at one time, taking 450mg of it, mostly 300mg, but I have weaned off over a long, long time. Am taking 50mg now, but will be done by Thanksgiving. I have replaced it with some natural things. Not that I'd recommend that for anyone!

I just noticed that it helped with depression back in 2001, but when I was REALLY depressed, it was my cir****tances that had to change, not my meds. I think I was hoping it'd insulate me from life, but THAT didn't happen! And I was denied long term care because of it, so I want it to be GONE.

P.S.  My year + long absence has NOTHING to do with my WLS, or my type of WLS. See my profile.

You wouldn't by chance be taking 5-HTP?  I'm just curious because my therapist recommended that to me and I took it back before my RNY.  It did seem to help but I was told to take it in the evening and I'm not good a remembering to take meds then.  I took Wellbutrin for years and switched to Effexor this last spring.  Despite being extended release, I do seem to be getting some benefit from it. Anyhow, I was just curious if you wouldn't mind sharing what you are taking and how it is working for you. Thanks, Jennifer
