Cottage Cheese Test

Just tried the cottage cheese test, not sure if I did it right....In 5 minutes I ate about 4 ounces and that was about all I could stomach.  Not sure if that is because I don't like cottage cheese or that was all I could hold.  I felt like if I had another bite I would.  So what does this tell me, that my pouch is about 4 ounces?  I know I can eat more than that. when it comes to other foods... I decided today to start tracking my food again on fitday.  I know I need at least 1300 calories a day to maintain my weight.  I have not gained any but I feel like I can eat so much and it is scares me.  I will be 2 years out in December. I see where others post what they eat and I feel like I eat so much more than what people post.  I don't eat nearly what I did post op but I can sit down to a meal and eat.  Some days I seem to eat alot and other days I just don't eat much at all.  Well if anyone had any insite on this cottage cheese diet please post.... Thanks

This tells you that you can eat 4 oz of cottage cheese in 5 minutes.

It doesn't tell you how much water or meat or salad you can eat in 1 minutes, 5 or 30.

I know there is a lot of hype about this test, but I wouldn't want to base my post-op life on this concept. Too misleading.

Just continue eating your small portions, protein first as you've done successfully so far. Our post-op life doesn't have to be all complicated, you know? Too hard to sustain.

Michelle,  I kind of thought when I first read about the cottage cheese test that it was just hype... but I did it anyway.  After eating it I thought gosh I know I can eat more than this when it comes to a meal.  I guess since I do maintain my weight I should just continue with what I am doing.  I eat my three meals and occassionally will have a snack.  It does seem harder during the weekend when nothing is going on.  This is where the bad habit of eating when I am board comes in....I just need to find something to occupy my time.  Thanks for bringing me back to life....you are so right post op life doesn't need to be complicated.  Jodi

I'm a volume eater, always was, always will be. It's better for me not to know in cups how much I can eat. Better for me to know I can eat one small pork chop (or less than one large), and maybe a few bites of sides.

If I "knew" I could get in 2 cups in say, 15 minuts, I WOULD MAKE SURE I DID. See? I cannot trust me with that info.

For other ppl, if they are eating less than they think, it might be reassuring (my tool is intact) or it could backfire. I kinda hate to see that used as any kind of measuring device. We already had a life timeof being compared to (mother, sister, friend, whoever) and found wanting. So, anything that resembles competition sorta makes me uneasy.

I do my 6 protein drinks and 4 meal/snacks (I'm not sure how to categorize what Ieat) and get as much water in between as possible. As long as I stay away from SUGAR, I ho my weight.

Just a few bites of sugar makes me forget who I am! Ieat more volume, more often and most especially SUGAR. And it only takes a few days to wear that mistake on my hips, you know?

Any of these are what I use:

1.) Champion ProScore 100 choco + 8 oz water + ice, blended (hand blender or Magic Bullet).
2.) Champion Pure Whey Stack choco + 6-8 oz water, shaken.
3.) IDS vanilla-cinnamon + "glop" of DaVinci sugar free caramel sauce + 8 oz water + ice, blended.
4.) the PWS chco + the van-cin (50/50) in about 10 oz ho****er, stirred or hand blender.

Lately I've been adding a shake of cinnamon to my hot ones since cinnamon fights belly fat.

I always put 1 scoop of UpCal D powder in (500mg calcium citrate, 250 IU of vit D3).

I've never counted the protein in foods, since I am distal and maybe can get 10% of it. I don't really need this many to hold good labs, but I use them for volume and appetite control, as well.

I have a question for you. During my first year post op I had to quit using protein drinks due to severe constipation issues that got worse when I would use these supplements. Do you have any recommendations on protein shakes that might not cause this problem? They equated the protein shakes to being like "wood chips" in my system and it caused many problems. Thanks in advance for any info!

Which ones? Soy can wreak havoc (either way) with the bowel. Some complain of the Big D with whey, but constipation seems to be a constant, if you don't mind the play on words.

Many of us use magnesium oxide (pills) to keep things moving along nicely.

I struggled with the Big D for the first year, oh so many suprises! Then suddenly, everything slammed shut at about 14 months and then there was 11 yrs of the big C. I tried E-V-E-R-Y-T-H-I-N-G, natural, unnatural, common, strange, weird, outlandish, cheap, expensive, crazy or sane. Nothing. I used Miralax with some success. But last year added the mag ox, still use Miralax and 4 stool softeners atnight, and have a hot drink first thing in the morning.

Protein supps are not optional for me. With my distal, I'd need XXX g per day, anyway, but without them to help me stick to my plan, I'd certainly have regained at least 50# by now.

I was eventually dx with IBS. Not just a guess, like the usual, "I dont' know, so let's call it IBS", but it was actually seen misbehaving during a routine c-scope (I'm old now, so get them. Lucky me). Peristalsis is supposed to flow along, like a ripplin brook from food-goes-in end to food-goes-oiut end. My bowel acted like the agitator on a washing machine, gooing back 'n forth. Once he actually SAW it, it was much easier to come to grips with it and stop worrying about it being what I ate or drank or didn't and just GET ON WITH IT.

Hi Michelle, I was just at your place today getting my protein.  I am curious.  You said you add cinnamon to your hot proteins.  I was told you couldn't heat them.   So, what is the scoop?

This is my first time on this website.  I am struggling and figured I better look for help soon.  I am 2 1/2 years out.  Never made my goal of 150. Stayed pretty steady around 160 for a year and now am past 170 and climbling! Thanks,  Linda

Hey Skinny Minnie.  Great to see you and your latest pics on your profile look MARVELOUS!  Glad to hear from you again, and I did not nor will I try the cottage cheese test.  Just like some of you some things I can eat more of, some things less, and some days it differs.  I still have a protein shake for breakfast daily and focus on proteins throughout the day and stay away from carbs as much as possible.  I get in 2-3 fruits a day and some veggies of some kind most days.  I still walk 3 miles a day and to Chicometrics 3 times a week to keep off the inches I have lost, as several came back last winter even though I did not gain wait.  I am down to 125 and my latest pic on my profile shows me at that weight.  That is 10 lbs below my goal, and I love it here.

Take care and keep in touch.

Hugs,

April
