InFed Iron Infusions?
Well, my doctor and I have finalized plans to go ahead with IV iron using the one day Infed versus the 8-week Ferlecit treatment...Has anyone used the one day treatment and what were some of your reactions? I know everyone's diiferent and my hematologist will have me on benadryl and a pain reliever to try try to offset any worst case scenario reactions, but I wanted some feedback from WLS grads. Also, about how long was it until you started to feel better? Thanks guys!!

You can go there. Hundreds of ppl have used one method or another. Or both.
Might be some in the archives.
I have always done well with oral irons, despite my 100cm common channel, so I hope you can eventually get off the IV iron and onto some toerable orals.

P.S. My year + long absence has NOTHING to do with my WLS, or my type of WLS. See my profile.

altho i am a 100cm rny, i've done very well on oral irons. i hope you can find one that agrees with you. I'd hate to be tied to an IV for life.
I suspect my insurance might not pay for it.
Just keep trying irons til you find your mate!

I do InFed twice a year and neither are one day treatment. Mine are 2 x week for 3 weeks. I had no allergic reaction at all to InFed but my high dose did make me feel nausea and metallic taste for days, but it was so worth it. When we started the infusion my count was unable to be read, brought it to 300 and 2 weeks ago I was at 110...it is going on 6 months so this is the best and longest it has lastest for me. I would say I started to feel better (more energy) within the first 2 weeks of infusion and my muscle pain (arms) and headaches went away about then as well.
Very first try of iron infusions was Ferrilcet and I had an awful allergic reaction that they stopped it after the trial dose and I ended up being monitored for 8 hrs with benedryl. Awful huge itchy hives and fever.
P.S. My iron issues are't all due to surgery. I have been iron deficient and anemia since birth...I am not sure if this is helping it but I am also on 2 injections a week of B12 (1000mcg). My hemo is at 13 which is also the highest it has been in my lifetime.
Current weight:120 and still 5'4
Do you know what your dose is going to be? I have had two IV Infed infusions of 1,200mgs and one of 1,000mgs. I do best when I do them over two days.
Since it will be your first time, you will have a one hour test dose and be monitored closely by nurses for allergic reaction.
My low iron symptoms were severe: Dizziness, complete exhaustion and shortness of breath. The shortness of breath and dizziness went away within one week. My energy returned over the next few weeks.
My negative side effect was achey joints (2 days). When my large dose was given quickly (6 hours) I experienced itching that evening and the next day. I now see a Hematologist for my low iron issues. She orders an IV Iron infusion of infed whenever my ferritin drops below 100.
I hope that you feel well soon.
I always take my portable DVD player and books/magazines to read, but I usually end up sleeping through my infusion.
