I'm sorry you're going through all this.  It's a lot to deal with in a short time.  The nurses don't have to understand all the nuances of your DS surgery to understand POOP.  As a nurse, I spend more time than you would think possible with it.  The ostomy nurse should be an excellent resource for trouble shooting your appliance.  Sometimes it helps to try different types.  Also it may take some practice and trial and error for you to get really good at getting a good seal.  The home health nurse should have good knowledge regarding ostomy management as well, but some are more experienced than others.  Good luck with this and I hope your treatment goes well.

Hi Kim,

I had colon cancer in 2004...I found the folks at the Colon Cancer Alliance to be a plethora of information, you may want to check out their web site at www.ccalliance.org  and search for ostomy support.  You can even call them and they can steer you in the right direction. 

Are you having chemo?  I will keep you and your family in my thoughts.
